A Distinct Christian Charity

A leading ministry among Christian charities, Compassion serves Jesus Christ as advocates for children, with a commitment to Jesus Christ in all we do. When combined with our Statement of Faith, why we serve, how we serve and who we serve creates a distinct approach to ministry.

  • We are a Christ-centered Christian charity — Jesus' life and teachings shape our programs and guide all aspects of our ministry. We seek to honor Jesus in all we do. We treat people with respect and seek to share the love of God with compassion. Our response to a world filled with hundreds of millions of children living in extreme poverty is to love like Jesus did and follow his example as presented in the Word of God.
  • We are a church-based Christian charity — Local churches in developing communities are best suited to address the needs of the children in their communities. These churches are already located and involved in the communities, know the families and understand the effective ways to help people. We partner with these local Christian churches to make their ministry more effective.
  • We are a child-focused Christian charity — Through our faith-based holistic child development model, we blend physical, social, economic and spiritual care together to help children in poverty fully mature in every facet of life.

Helping Children Experience a Fulfilling Christian Life

Compassion is one of the largest Christian charities in existence — helping over 2 million babies, children and young adults in need in 25 countries!

Working primarily through child sponsorship to release children from poverty in Jesus' name and help them become fulfilled Christian adults, each child in our Child Sponsorship Program grows and develops spiritually, socially, physically and economically. In the program each child is linked to one sponsor at a time and the child is the direct beneficiary of the support.

Through local church partners around the world, children registered in our sponsorship program receive medical checkups and health care, as well as health and hygiene training.

Our church partners identify the most vulnerable children in their communities — the poorest of the poor — to invest in and help. In addition to the health and medical assistance registered children receive, they also receive ongoing Christian training and academic assistance, including textbooks, school uniforms, post-secondary courses, tutoring, test and lab supplies, and even literacy and financial training for the children's caregivers.

Another area of assistance is key life-skills training, mentoring and vocational programs — helping provide trade skills and lifelong income potential.

Sponsorship also provides nutritious food and supplements to protect against malnutrition, recreational activities and support to develop self-confidence and social skills, and protection from crime, human trafficking, violence and danger.

In addition, to its Child Sponsorship Program, Compassion also has specific donor initiatives to help babies and mothers in poverty, develop future leaders and meet critical needs, including but not limited to clean water and proper sanitation, lifesaving surgeries and other medical instance, assistance for families affected by COVID-19, and disaster relief services and aid in the aftermath of natural disasters.

Appalled by the great number of small, shivering and starving war orphans on the streets of South Korea in 1952, Rev. Everett Swanson began including the orphans' needs into his revival meetings, and Christians responded. Since that time, Compassion has worked to call out the fullest potential of children in poverty and help them develop into all God intends them to be.

Is There Financial Accountability?

Compassion holds to the highest standards of financial integrity and accountability, including using money only for the purpose for which it was raised, regularly performing program audits to ensure our programs are well managed and funds are properly disbursed and applied, and balancing low administrative and fundraising costs with high-quality programs.

As a Christ-centered nonprofit, we strive to be good stewards of the resources you entrust to us. That's why watchdog organizations like the Better Business Bureau, Evangelical Council for Financial Accountability, Charity Watch and Charity Navigator give Compassion high marks for financial accountability.
