Renata’s Wait

Though unsponsored,* Renata still receives essential benefits

Eight-year-old Renata (right in above photo), with sparkling brown eyes and a winning smile, has lots of friends. She is also a doting big sister to two younger brothers. Renata and her brothers live in a tourist town on Ecuador’s coast. Their mother, Johana, looks after the home, while their father, Omar, works as a day laborer on the docks.

Every day, early in the morning, Omar heads to the docks in search of work. But the occasional, low-paying day job is not nearly enough to provide for his family. Johana explains, “Our economic situation is difficult. Many times, we have nothing to eat.”

The family’s situation improved dramatically when a local church launched a Compassion-assisted center and the director, Venilda, invited Johana to register Renata in the Child Sponsorship Program. Since then, Venilda says, “Renata does not miss a day coming to the center.” Sometimes, Renata also brings her friends and brothers to the center, where no child is denied a plate of food.

Renata does not yet have a sponsor, and she looks forward to the day when she receives the happy news that someone has stepped up to sponsor her. But while she waits for this special person to come into her life, gifts like yours to the Unsponsored Children’s Fund ensure that she doesn’t miss out on even one essential benefit of Compassion’s program — from nutritious meals to health checkups to education assistance and spiritual nurturing.

Expressing his hope for Renata, the pastor of Compassion’s local partner church says, “Our desire is for her to have a sponsor who supports her along the path that we have begun with every child.”

*Renata was unsponsored at the time this story was written, but she may since have been linked with a sponsor.
