A Change of Heart

Meskerem’s pregnancy turns from devastation to joy

Fourteen-year-old Meskerem was shocked to learn she was pregnant. The baby’s father denied responsibility, and her mother was heartbroken. But it was her father’s reaction that devasted Meskerem the most. More concerned about his own reputation in the community than his only child’s welfare, he abandoned the family.

Shortly before her delivery date, Meskerem showed up at the local Compassion partner church at the insistence of her mom, who had heard they had a program that helps pregnant women. Upon meeting the teen, Tsion, implementer of the Survival Program at that center, immediately registered her, and when the time came, Meskerem gave birth to a healthy baby boy, named Anteneh.

But then another challenge surfaced: Meskerem didn’t want to care for her baby — or even see him. She says, “Whenever I saw him, it just reminded me of what my life could have been.

Determined to turn the situation around, Tsion visited the young mom every morning to encourage her. “Thanks to her, I have learned to love my son,” Meskerem says. In addition, because of gifts like yours to the Survival Program, Meskerem knows how to properly care for Anteneh.

The training sessions enabled Meskerem to make informed decisions about Anteneh’s development. And provisions such as milk, food supplies, clothing and medical care for her son have been especially beneficial.

But more than the program’s provisions and training, Meskerem says that what relieved the shame and misery she felt were people like Tsion, who never judged her for her mistakes. Now she says, “When I see my son, I am joyful. I have also accepted Jesus as my Savior because it is only through him that I can have true redemption.”
