Double Struggle

Eduar and his family are rescued from two crises

It was the first rainy day after six months of severe drought in 6-year-old Eduar’s community. Just as predicted, rain had finally come to Honduras, and Eduar was hopeful.

When the nationwide COVID-19 quarantine was mandated two months earlier (last March), Eduar’s father and mother both lost their jobs, and they were struggling to make ends meet. Eduar hoped the rain that was finally falling in May would enable his parents to grow vegetables and earn some money by selling them at the local market.

Little did Eduar know that the long-awaited rains would only bring a greater challenge to his family.

“Late at night, heavy rains started to pour in our community like never before. Suddenly, a strong wave of water broke into our house and flooded the whole place in a blink of an eye. My husband acted quickly and took Eduar in his arms while we ran to save our lives,” recalls Adelina, Eduar’s mother.

Thankfully, the family of three survived, but their home was severely damaged, and all their belongings were swept away.

As soon as the staff from Eduar’s Compassion center learned about the situation, they jumped into action. Through gifts like yours to Critical Care, they were able to provide Eduar’s family with new furnishings, clothes and shoes, groceries, clean water and other basic needs. They also provided support for repairing their house and building a retaining wall to protect against future flooding. “We have been blessed and supported not only during the flood but during the COVID-19 quarantine. We deeply appreciate the rapid response to our need,” says Adelina.

As for Eduar … he especially likes his new bed. “It’s very soft and big!”
