At this time last year, everything was changing. The COVID-19 pandemic was sweeping the globe. Schools were closing, quarantines were starting and restrictions were being put into place. And just as each of those realities affected us in the United States, they also deeply impacted children living in poverty — physically, economically, spiritually and emotionally.

In Colombia, where many Compassion-assisted children live, a quarantine was mandated. Many people had to stop going to work. The streets were empty. Children could no longer meet at their local Compassion partner church. But Ester, a volunteer tutor there, would not let hopelessness win. Instead, she came up with creative ways to serve the children under her care.

Ester began work at 7:30 each morning. With her daughter’s help, she spent hours recording videos to encourage the quarantined children. Each video was funny, educational and motivational. Ester did this so the children would feel loved and connected while stuck at home.

For the children who did not have access to the internet to watch the videos, she made regular phone calls to share the lessons, read the Bible, pray and encourage them. And there was one child in particular who especially needed this support.

Eight-year-old Neriana has diabetes. When the quarantine started in her community, Neriana became fearful and anxious to the point that her health was affected.

“Neriana used to get nervous when seeing the television news,” says her mother, Johana. “It affected her emotionally and physically, increasing her blood sugar levels. I was so worried and called the center looking for support.”

Ester was the one to answer the call.

“When I realized that she was emotionally affected by the quarantine, I began to support her more intensively,” says Ester. “I [called] her almost every day. When she [was] sad, I [encouraged] her through a Bible story and we [prayed] together … I also [encouraged] her to read the Bible. She told me that she [was] reading the Bible with her sisters.”

With Ester’s support, Neriana was able to learn to calm her nerves and anxiety. She began trusting God to carry her through this storm.

“I am no longer afraid of COVID-19 because my tutor taught me that God cares for me and my family,” says Neriana.

And Neriana’s mother saw the shift toward peace in her child too.

“It makes me happy to see Neriana’s joy when she receives her tutor’s calls,” says Johana. “Through these, my child has received emotional support and has learned about God’s protection, which helped Neriana find peace. For me, Ester is not only a tutor, but a friend to me and my daughter.”

Even amid challenging and nerve-racking times, Neriana received the exact emotional care she needed to make it through from a tutor-turned-friend. And the best part is, that is the story for millions of children across the globe. Your generosity ensures that the child you sponsor receives this same kind of loving, grace-filled care. Thank you!
