Families who live in poverty face incredible challenges. They are more susceptible to natural disasters like flooding. They are also more likely to experience food insecurity, poor housing and limited access to health care. And the world’s poorest children are twice as likely to die before their fifth birthday as the richest children.
Children and families living in poverty around the world need our prayers — and Psalms is a great place to start.
The book of Psalms is a collection of 150 poems that can be sung as songs or prayed as prayers. Organized into 117 chapters, there are psalms for nearly every emotion, from praise and thanksgiving to pain and uncertainty.
Below you’ll find a collection of prayers from the Psalms along with invitations to pray specifically for issues related to life in poverty. We hope these beautiful words from Scripture will be a blessing to you as your prayers will be a blessing to people in need around the world.
Pray that God will hear the cries of the poor, wherever they live. Pray that, in his goodness, he will provide for their needs and offer comfort where there is pain and loss.
“Hear me, Lord, and answer me,
for I am poor and needy.
Guard my life, for I am faithful to you;
save your servant who trusts in you.
You are my God; have mercy on me, Lord,
for I call to you all day long.
Bring joy to your servant, Lord,
for I put my trust in you.”
— Psalm 86:1–4, NIV
Pray for children and families who live in areas vulnerable to natural disasters. Pray that God will protect them from harm.
