On May 30, 2023, heavy rainfall caused creeks to overflow in the area of Churido, Colombia. Significant portions of the main roads flooded as well as several houses. Families lost many household items. To date, 130 participants have been impacted. Thankfully, they are all healthy. The Child Development Center (CDC) has been evaluating the situation to determine how to best assist affected families, but has encountered limitations due to inaccessible roads. The Compassion Colombia National Office is actively monitoring the situation and will be making sure families receive assistance through Disaster Relief Funds when possible.

Disaster Update #1: July 10, 2023
As of July 10, the rainfall has ceased. To date, 131 participants have been impacted by the heavy rains and floods. Thankfully, all participants are healthy. However, the flooding caused significant damage to many homes and eroded some of the floors away. Currently, many homes are still in the process of being repaired. The Child Development Center (CDC) has completed a detailed assessment of the damage and is utilizing Disaster Relief Funds to provide families with construction materials such as concrete, zinc roofing and wood to help reinforce their homes. They have also provided families with household items items such as mattresses, clothing, school supplies and clean water.

Disaster Final Report: July 24, 2023
As of July 24, the situation in Churido has significantly improved. The flooding has subsided. In total, 131 participants were impacted. Thankfully, the affected participants and their families are in good health despite the challenges they faced. The children have been resilient and are finding joy in activities at the Child Development Center (CDC). The CDC has utilized Disaster Relief Funds to provide families with meals, mattresses, clothing and school supplies. Children have returned to school and families have resumed their daily activities.
