On August 8, 2023, heavy flooding caused significant damage in the town of Wonji, Ethiopia. The ditch that channels water from the mountains was broken, which caused increased damage to homes. Some homes were completely destroyed. Families whose homes are unlivable were moved to government-owned homes. The Compassion Ethiopia National Office is closely monitoring the situation and evaluating the full extent of the damage. They will be utilizing Disaster Relief Funds to provide assistance to the impacted participants and their families.
Please pray for all families in Wonji who were impacted by the flooding.
Disaster Update #1: August 25, 2023
As of August 25, 2023, the flooding in Wonji has started to subside. To date, 12 participants and one Child Development Center (CDC) were impacted by the flooding. Some crops have been destroyed, as well as some household items. The CDC has been able to utilize Disaster Relief Funds to provide impacted families with items such as food rations, household essentials, rent assistance and income generation skills. They also plan to help the participants reconstruct their homes in the near future.
Please continue to pray for the families in Wonji as they recover from the flooding.
Disaster Final Report: December 1, 2023
As December 1, 2023, the flooding in Wonji has ceased. To date, 12 participants and one Child Development Center (CDC) were impacted by the flooding. The Compassion Ethiopia National Office utilized the Disaster Relief Funds to support the impacted participants and their families with food, household items and repairs for their damaged houses.
