As of February 2023, the flood waters have receded and the land has dried significantly. In total, 1,163 participants were affected by the flooding. Thankfully, all affected participants are healthy. The Compassion Colombia National Office was able to provide affected families with relief items such as food, water, tarps and materials for home repair. The Compassion Colombia National Office continue to check in with affected families as they recover from the flooding.

December 5, 2022

The rains of the last few days have increased throughout Guajira, Colombia, and flooding and loss of soil and crops continue to occur. To date, 1,157 participants and their families have been affected by the severe flooding. The local churches are making house calls on these families whenever possible and are providing food and medical resources as needed. The Compassion Colombia National Office is continuing to assess the needs of these families and is offering support where needed.

October 31, 2022

The heavy rains caused the Villanueva River to suddenly overflow, which caused severe flooding in several communities. At this time, no additional participants have been impacted. The roads are impassable, and many families lost appliances, mattresses, food, furniture, and household goods. The livelihood of these families has also been affected. The Compassion Colombia National Office is continuing to assess the needs of these families and is offering support where needed. The activities at the Child Development Center (CDC) in Guajira are suspended until the weather improves.

October 26, 2022

The rainy season is expected to continue until mid-December in Colombia. To date, 349 participants and their families have received assistance from the local church. Awnings were delivered to 346 of the families, which will provide temporary covering until they are able to repair some of the damages to their homes. The Compassion Colombia National Office is continuing to assess the needs of these families and is prepared to offer support where needed.

October 21, 2022

Rains have continued to fall heavily in several sectors of Colombia due to the second rainy season, the La Niña phenomenon and the aftermath of Hurricane Julia. This has caused the Rancheria River to overflow, which resulted in the loss of homes, household goods, food, livestock, clothing and kitchen items.

So far, 349 participants and their families have been impacted by this flooding. The churches have been providing support for the families and have reported the highest priority needs. The Compassion Colombia National Office has provided disaster relief funds for basic sanitation kits, mattresses and food. The Child Development Centers (CDCs) will continue to assess the needs and provide relief for these families.
