Update #1: December 9, 2021
The Compassion Peru staff members have been activated in each area affected by the earthquake. Right now, the people most impacted by the disaster are those who live near the Utcubamba River, which overflowed after the earthquake. To date, 44 Compassion-assisted families and one Compassion church partner have been impacted by the earthquake and subsequent flooding. Thankfully, no injuries have been reported. However, families have suffered damage to their homes — some have even been forced to evacuate. All affected families are being provided with food, water, hygiene items and mattresses. Compassion staff members are also creating plans to gather repair materials for the damaged homes.
Please continue to pray for the situation in Peru — specifically for the safety and swift recovery of the affected families, our church partners and Compassion Peru staff.
Disaster Alert: December 3, 2021
On November 28, 2021, a 7.5 magnitude earthquake struck the northeast region of Peru. As of right now, we know that this area is home to more than 17,000 Compassion-assisted children. Across the region, there are reports of damaged homes and roads. In one community, the local river has begun to overflow, and families are being displaced. We are grateful to report that at this point, we have not received reports of any injured Compassion-assisted children. However, the situation and damage are still being assessed by our church partners on the ground.
Please pray for the safety of children and their families, as well as our church partners in the affected region.
