Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood
In 1997, Fred Rogers was honored to received a Lifetime Achievement Award. He gave kids confidence and helped them understand that they had worth. He wanted everyone to make it a beautiful day in their neighborhood.
Let’s listen in to his acceptance speech.
Mr. Rogers encouraged the audience to take the time to remember those people who invested in them and took the time to help them develop. Maybe it was a parent, teacher, or even a TV host like Mr. Rogers who reassured you that you were loved and worthy of respect.
We can aim to be that person in the life of a child. It may be providing your arms for an embrace, your voice for an encouraging word, or simply your time for much-needed companionship. Make yourself available to God. He will use you to reach a child if you are willing.
First John 3: 18 says, “Dear children, let us not love with words or speech but with actions and in truth.” Our words and actions can have a huge impact on others, especially children. Prior to verse 18, Jesus gives an example how to accomplish this by asking a compelling question. “If anyone has material possessions and sees a brother or sister in need but has no pity on them, how can the love of God be in that person?”
Being compassionate to those in need is a phenomenal way to make a lasting impact. Go out and make it a beautiful day in your neighborhood!
