Why $1.90?

Millions of people are living in extreme poverty on $1.90/day or less. Before 2020, global poverty was on the decline, but COVID-19 unraveled years of progress and caused extreme global poverty to rise for the first time in over 20 years. 100 million more people are living in extreme poverty now than before the pandemic began.1

One consequence of extreme poverty is global hunger and food insecurity. According to the UN, between 720 and 811 million people went hungry in 2020, and 30% of the global population lacked access to adequate food.2

Together, we can work to restore what the pandemic has stolen. The war on extreme poverty desperately needs our collective voice to call for change. You can make an impact by raising awareness of extreme poverty and its impact on global hunger.

Compassion helps meet the health and nutrition needs of the children in our program, while also providing preventive care to support long-term wellness

How Compassion provides health and nutrition

When children do not have enough nutritious food to eat, malnutrition, starvation, and chronic health issues become a serious and potentially life-threatening reality. Undernutrition has led to nearly 50% of deaths in children under 5.

Compassion's Health and Nutrition initiatives support the local church to meet the life-threatening needs of children in our program, while also providing preventive care to support long-term wellness.

Since April 2020, Compassion has provided over 22.4 million Food Packs to support children and families. COVID-19 and the resulting economic shutdown caused many caregivers to lose their income or miss opportunities to earn a daily wage. These food packs provided households with a supply of essentials like rice, eggs, meat, milk, and corn.
