Life change often doesn’t happen in a single moment. Instead, it happens through small, faithful steps, each one bringing you closer to the life you were meant for. The same is true for children living in poverty.
Shelter. School supplies. Safe water. Encouragement. What may seem like simple, everyday things can change the life of a child. In fact, when given consistently over time, these essentials move children from just surviving to thriving, equipping them to leave poverty behind.
Through Compassion, our local church partners and the consistent support of child sponsors, children’s needs are met again and again. Everyday moments become part of a larger story of transformation. That’s the impact of child sponsorship, and these testimonies are living proof.
1. Zaid Walks Again After Medical Care
At 8 years old, Zaid from Honduras suddenly lost his ability to walk and breathe. Diagnosed with Guillain-Barré syndrome, he was in the intensive care unit for weeks, dependent on a ventilator and subjected to countless tests.
The cost of his care threatened to drown Zaid’s parents, Nixon and Angie, who were already living in poverty. But they weren’t alone. Zaid’s Compassion center stepped in to provide the funds for critical expenses like his transportation to the emergency room and urgently required tests.
After more than a month of uncertainty and fear, Zaid was able to leave the ICU and rest at home. But he was still unable to walk. With the support of his parents and grandparents, Zaid began practicing moving his toes and standing. And although he was getting stronger, he needed specialized therapy.
Willing to do what it took to see Zaid well again, the Compassion center covered the cost of his therapy and other medical care to support his recovery. After months of rehabilitation, Zaid walked again.
Zaid now goes to school and plays with his friends. He even chases a soccer ball around the yard with his dad. Although illness left him fighting for every step, Zaid is walking confidently into the future God has for him.

2. Deborah Turns Her Photography Passion Into Purpose
As a child, Deborah from Rwanda was fascinated by photography. She longed for a camera of her own that she could use to capture the world around her. But poverty made that dream seem out of reach.
At her Compassion center, Deborah was able to take a vocational training class that taught her the fundamentals of photography, digital editing, visual storytelling and entrepreneurship. More importantly, it helped her believe in her potential.
Equipped with photography skills, confidence and a camera, Deborah began capturing special moments at events and celebrations. What started as a new skill soon became a way to earn an income.
Now 21, Deborah earns enough to be independent, an achievement she never thought possible. She can invest in equipment, grow her business, continue learning and even plan for the future. Through education and encouragement, what was once Deborah’s hobby is now her livelihood. She has turned her passion into purpose.
“I’m grateful to my sponsor and project staff for their support and encouraging words that I can achieve my dreams. They have motivated me in so many ways from when I was very young.” — Deborah
3. Moses Stays Healthy With Safe Water
Water scarcity impacts many impoverished communities in Africa. In Moses’ village in Zambia, families once faced a choice: Pay for water or go without. But even if you did manage to pay, the water could still be contaminated — a reality that almost cost 9-year-old Moses his life.
One day, Moses’ grandmother, Angelina, couldn’t find water at their normal market kiosk. So, she purchased it at another one. The next day, after drinking the water, Moses fell severely ill and was rushed to the hospital.
Although Moses recovered, the family continued to fear their circumstances. Paying for water was already hard; Angelina would often borrow money just to buy a bucket. But getting sick from the water was a painful reminder that the very thing they needed to survive was also threatening their health and future.
Hope soon came through the local church. After identifying the water crisis and seeing its devastating effects, the church, in partnership with Compassion, built a borehole and installed two storage tanks — enough to supply the community with consistent safe water.
For Moses and his family, water is freely accessible. And better still, it’s safe, protecting Moses’ health and that of those around him.
“One day, we saw a big truck come to the church. They found water. The whole community celebrated!” — Angelina
4. Dadiva Becomes a Thriving Business Owner
Dadiva from Mexico grew up watching her mother embroider, an art she fell in love with. But sewing and embroidery would become more than a passion — it would become the stability Dadiva needed to build a future as bright as the clothing she would stitch.
At 11 years old, Dadiva had the opportunity to take a sewing workshop at her Compassion center. There, she mastered the basics of embroidery. And with a generous financial gift from her sponsor, Joseph, Dadiva bought her very first sewing machine.
Dadiva continued to practice embroidery and sewing as she grew. At the age of 20, despite the overwhelming fear of failing, she started her own sewing business. Just three months after opening, she was able to purchase an industrial sewing machine with her earnings.
Today, Dadiva has more than a successful business — she has the income and stability she needs to thrive.
“Without Compassion, I wouldn’t have learned the basics of embroidery and sewing, and I wouldn’t have met my sponsor, who provided me with a sewing machine. I wouldn’t have discovered my passion and potential as a seamstress.” — Dadiva

6. James Finds a Home After Disaster
Six-year-old James lives in a remote community in Ecuador with his brothers, Fernando, Leonel and Mateo. During the winter, intense storms bring flooding and landslides to the village, a reality the brothers know all too well.
One day during dinner, the family watched in horror as water began pouring into their home. And soon, the mud came, covering everything in its path. James and his family ran from their house and sought shelter at their grandparents’ home.
In the morning, they looked outside at the devastation around them. It was then that James discovered they had lost everything. They were homeless.
Already living in poverty, Paolo and Manuel, his mother and father, weren’t sure how they would rebuild their lives. But just a few days later, the local church stepped in, providing supplies to help the family rebuild their home. They even replaced what the family had lost, including mattresses, clothes, shoes, dishes and food.
Today, James and his brothers are succeeding in school and helping their family care for their animals. They’re also growing fast, receiving consistent food supplies and other care through their Compassion center.
While natural disaster threatened their future, the care of the church helped transform loss into a new beginning for the entire family.
“I’m happy because my brothers and I finally have a mattress to sleep on.” — James

8. Sherry & Cherry Learn by Solar-Powered Lamp
Twins Sherry and Cherry from Kenya, age 7, were always encouraged by their parents, David and Unisila, to work hard in school so they could achieve their dreams. But the costly, fickle light of a paraffin lamp threatened their learning and their health.
Although David and Unisila sell milk and eggs at the local market, the paraffin lamp was a persistent drain on the family’s earnings. It required a liter and a half of paraffin, at a cost of $1 per liter, for just three days of inadequate light. The recurring expense of $5 per week was a substantial amount, especially when living in poverty.
“Every coin for paraffin was a coin stolen from tomorrow’s meal,” Unisila recounts. But the financial burden was only the start. The air in their small home was heavy with kerosene, and the smell of smoke would irritate the twins’ eyes and throats. The smoke, combined with the flickering light, made studying next to impossible.
During a home visit, local church staff saw that the lack of light was a poverty trap, keeping the twins sick, preventing them from learning and draining the family’s resources.
So they gave the family a solar lamp as well as training on how to use it. They also provided income generation training to David and Unisila, inspiring them to reinvest the money once spent on paraffin to grow their businesses.
Inside Sherry and Cherry’s home, the air is finally fresh. The homework that used to take agonizing hours now flies by. Their eyes are opened to opportunity instead of strained by darkness and smoke. The home is no longer defined by darkness but by the promise of a brighter future for the entire family.
“I can see all the letters now clearly. Before, my head hurt, and I would have to guess the numbers or skip the hard ones because the light was too weak. Now, I know I will pass the exam because I can see everything perfectly!” — Cherry
9. Anderson Sees Hope Through New Glasses
Thirteen-year-old Anderson from Nicaragua suffered from debilitating headaches. In class, he struggled to see the whiteboard, preventing him from learning and succeeding. A simple eye exam and glasses could change everything, but his family couldn’t afford either one.
Seeing his need, Anderson’s Compassion center provided the funds for him to receive a medical checkup, a visit with an optometrist and his very own glasses.
With his eyesight restored, Anderson can excel in school and develop the skills he needs to break the cycle of poverty. Now, Anderson not only sees the whiteboard clearly, but he sees a hope-filled future of possibility.
“My parents took me to a clinic, but the glasses were too expensive. The center helped me, and I am very grateful because they provided me with my glasses, and I feel like I have improved a lot.” — Anderson
10. Mathias Grows in God With the Gift of a Bible
Many children living in poverty don’t own a Bible. This was once true for 15-year-old Mathias from Togo too. Before receiving a Bible from Compassion, Mathias couldn’t read fluently. He also didn’t know Jesus and refused to go to church when invited.
After being gifted a Bible, Mathias’ life changed in more ways than one. He first used it to practice his reading. And as he did, he learned about God too. With each passage Mathias read, his skills improved, and he grew in his relationship with Jesus.
Mathias not only gained skills necessary to further his future, but he also entrusted that future to his heavenly Father.
“I’m grateful to God for allowing me to receive a Bible at the center. It is good to go to church and belong to God, because on the last day we will meet in heaven.” — Mathias
