Where Is Honudras?
Honduras is a country in Central America that borders Guatemala, El Salvador, Nicaragua, the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea.
Key Challenges in Honduras & Our Response
It’s true that Honduras is an incredible country with a rich culture and many natural wonders. However, it’s also home to children and families living in poverty who must face many unique challenges.
Crime & Gang Violence
Poverty in Honduras leads to high rates of crime and violence. Many of our child development centers are located in neighborhoods marred by organized crime and gang activity.
Gangs are known to recruit children and teens who may see crime as the only way to experience a better life. Unfortunately, these children and teens are placed in serious danger.
Our Response: Protecting Children From Crime & Violence
Children who are actively involved in the Compassion program are less susceptible to gang activity. We offer children activities such as education and extracurricular activities like sports that they can enjoy instead of turning to crime.
In addition to providing daily programs, we also protect children from harm. We teach kids and teens how to stand up for themselves and their rights. We also teach our volunteers and staff how to intervene when they see signs of violence.
Unreached Remote Areas
In Central America, many children and their families live in remote areas. Those living in these hard-to-reach locations often go without basic human services like electricity, clean water, medical care and education.
Our Response: Reaching Remote Areas Through the Local Church
Compassion partners with local churches throughout Honduras that have a heart for reaching these remote areas. Through the local church, children receive access to essentials they wouldn’t otherwise have, like nutritious meals and safe water.
Our Impact in Honduras
Compassion has served children and families throughout Honduras for over five decades. During this time, we’ve released thousands of children from poverty in Jesus’ name through our child sponsorship program.
