Christmas is the story of God’s greatest gift. The real meaning of Christmas is that God sent his Son, Jesus, to bring lasting hope to a broken world.
The hope of Christmas lasts forever. Through Jesus, we can experience God’s presence, salvation and the promise of eternal life.
Christmas hope is meant to change lives. We can share Christ’s love with others, especially children and families facing devastating poverty.
What Is the Real Meaning of Christmas?
The world was once lost in sin, forever separated from the heavenly Father. But one night, bright hope shone from a manger, breaking through the darkness. Our Savior, Jesus Christ, was born!
This is Christmas. While brightly wrapped gifts, gingerbread houses and colorful, twinkling trees are beloved traditions, they pale in comparison to the greatest gift ever given. The real meaning of Christmas is that God sent Jesus into our brokenness to restore, save and give us the gift of eternal hope in him.
Let’s continue to unwrap the truth about Christmas.
Restoration
Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign: The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and will call him Immanuel. — Isaiah 7:14, NIV
Jesus became flesh, just like us. At his birth, God came near. While sin once separated us from God, the coming of Immanuel, “God with us,” was the beginning of God’s plan to restore us to himself.
Through Jesus, a life-giving relationship with our heavenly Father became possible again. Now, we can have the incredible peace, wisdom, purpose, strength and joy that only come from knowing him.
The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth. — John 1:14, NIV

Salvation
But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord.” — Luke 2:10-11, NIV
Jesus, the Messiah, came into the world to save us from our sins. Through his birth, life, death and resurrection, he provided the way for all of us to receive salvation, experience God’s grace and have the assurance of eternal life in him.
“For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” — John 3:16, NIV
Eternal Hope
“I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” — John 8:12, NIV
Because of the restoration and salvation found in Christ, we have eternal hope despite our circumstances. No matter what this broken world throws our way, if we trust in and follow Jesus, we can live with confidence that God is with us now and that one day, we’ll spend eternity with him.
His promise is this: All things will be made new, and every hurt will be overcome. This is hope that lasts beyond a season or one holiday. It lasts forever.
For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all. So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen, since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal. — 2 Corinthians 4:17-18, NIV
Why Is Christmas Important for Us Today?
Christmas is far more than a historical event or just another celebration. Instead, it marks the moment hope entered our world, restored what sin had broken and delivered salvation to us all.
Because of this truth, Christmas should shape how we live, not just how we celebrate one season each year. Through the gift of Jesus, every day we can:
Trust in God’s presence: God isn’t distant — he’s with us through his Holy Spirit. No matter what challenges or uncertainties we face, we can know that God is walking alongside us, guiding us in every circumstance. We don’t have to fear. Instead, we can trust that he will never leave us or forsake us (Deuteronomy 31:8).
Practice restoration and forgiveness: Just as God restored our relationship with him through Jesus, we’re called to pursue reconciliation in our relationships with others. Christmas reminds us to extend grace, offer forgiveness and seek peace, reflecting God’s unconditional love.
Show gratitude: Each day, we have the opportunity to thank God for what he did for us. In response to the gift of Jesus, we can live with thankful hearts, making it a point to praise God for his faithfulness, grace and love in every season, not just at Christmastime.
Share God’s love with others: We’re not called to keep the good news of the gospel to ourselves. Instead, we’re called to share it with others. We can encourage those who feel discouraged, help those in need and show kindness to those who may feel forgotten. As they experience the hope found in Jesus, they too can become agents of hope to those around them.
Fight hopelessness: Loss. Pain. Confusion. We all face these heartaches. And sometimes, we can feel so surrounded by hardship that we start to fear nothing will ever change. Hopelessness can set in. But Christmas reminds us that our hope is not found in perfect circumstances but in a faithful Savior who has overcome the world (John 16:33). We can move through each day with courage, knowing our future is secure in him.
