How to Help Kids in Need: 7 Ways to Help Those in Poverty

Millions of children around the world live in poverty. But you can help. Learn how to help kids in need, including practical ways to make a difference starting today.

  • Poverty affects children in many ways. It hinders healthy growth, puts children at risk of disease and prevents them from reaching their full potential.

  • There are many ways we can help deliver hope and support to children in need, such as building awareness, giving to causes or even volunteering.

  • Child sponsorship is an effective way to help children in need living in some of the most impoverished areas of the world.

Poverty Affects Children in Many Ways

According to UNICEF, nearly 900 million children worldwide experience multidimensional poverty, lacking essentials like food, safe water and education. Around 412 million live in extreme poverty, meaning they must survive on less than $3 per day.

Poverty affects these children in many ways. For example:

  • Without nutritious food, children can’t grow and develop as God intended.

  • Without safe water, children are at risk of serious disease.

  • Without resources like school supplies or transportation, children can’t attend school, keeping them from reaching their full potential.

  • Without the essentials they need to thrive, children are left feeling hopeless, unable to see beyond their needs.

Because poverty’s impact runs deep in a child’s life, we have many compassionate ways to come alongside them with support and hope. Let’s explore 7 practical ways you can do just that to help children in need in your community and around the world.

How to Help Kids in Need: 7 Practical Ways

1. Build Awareness

The first step toward fighting child poverty is simple: Talk about it. Many people truly don’t realize the impacts of poverty or how many children suffer. By building awareness of the challenges children face, others might be more likely to care, get involved and support solutions that make a difference.

You can build awareness in simple, everyday ways. For example, share a story, a video or a fact about poverty on social media. Or share a link to an organization you trust. You can also talk to your friends and family openly about child poverty, building awareness within your own circle.

2. Give to a Food Pantry

Food is an essential we all need daily. However, it’s often the first essential affected by poverty. Families often face impossible choices, such as choosing between buying groceries and paying for housing. Those in the most extreme of cases may live on one meal a day or go without food completely.

Giving to a local food pantry can help bridge the gap for these families, preventing children from going hungry. Plus, donating is simple. You can load up and give your extra canned goods or nonperishable items, for example.

A great way to help is by calling your local pantries and asking what they need. You can then give knowing that you’re fulfilling a specific need for families in your area.

3. Become a Tutor

Many impoverished children may lack the resources they need to reach their academic potential. For example, something as simple as a place to study at home or even internet access can hinder their learning.

By becoming a tutor, you can help bridge learning gaps like these, ensuring children have the support they need to succeed.

To become a tutor, you can simply advertise your availability on social media or hang flyers in places like the public library. You can also call the local schools in your area to check and see if they have a tutoring program.

4. Give to a Cause

Perhaps one of the simplest ways to help kids in need is to donate to a cause that works to alleviate the effects of child poverty. You can even choose a cause you feel drawn to, such as disaster relief, education and even funds supporting moms and babies.

Remember: Any amount makes a difference. Whether you have $5 or $5,000, it all counts when used to help those in poverty.

5. Volunteer for a Ministry or Charity

Don’t have the extra finances to give to a cause? That’s okay! You can also give your time by volunteering to serve.

Many charities and ministries need volunteers to serve those in need, such as local food pantries and shelters. Some organizations even have remote volunteering opportunities that you can do from home.

To find volunteer opportunities, do a quick online search, use a website like Volunteer.gov or check your local groups on social media. You can also call local charities and ministries to see if help is needed.

6. Donate Essentials

Think about the essential things you use daily. When you wake up, you put on clothes for the day. You might put a bottle of water and a freshly sharpened pencil into your child’s school bag. You might even grab a jacket before heading out the door to work.

Clothing, school supplies, bottled water, jackets … all these things are essentials that many children are forced to go without. Donating them ensures children have what they need to thrive.

For example, go through your own child’s closet and donate those outfits that no longer fit. Or take your extra cash and buy some notebooks and folders to donate to your local school.

7. Sponsor a Child

It’s true that there are many families living in poverty in your neighborhood, city or state. But some of the most vulnerable children live in impoverished countries around the world where critical needs like food, medical care and even safe water are scarce.

You can help from right where you are through child sponsorship. As a sponsor, you’ll encourage a child and donate to them monthly.

This consistent support empowers a local church to care for a child’s immediate needs, introduce them to the hope of the gospel and prepare them for a brighter future.

Child poverty isn’t something we can tackle on our own. But together, we can make a difference in our own communities and around the world. Let these ideas inspire you to do your part in helping children see and achieve a brighter future.
