Compassion Cambodia: It's Time for Gospel Transformation

In Cambodia, the harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few. Compassion is sharing the hope of the gospel and releasing children from poverty in Jesus’ name. Will you join us?

Cambodia: A Nation Marked by Tragedy

Once the heart of the mighty Khmer Empire, Cambodia shone with culture, beauty and spiritual depth. But one of history’s darkest tragedies, the Khmer Rouge genocide, left deep scars on the nation.

An estimated 1.7 to 2 million Cambodians — 25% of the population — lost their lives during the Khmer Rouge genocide, including many who followed Jesus.

Even now, Cambodia feels the weight of the pain its people endured. Because so many lives were lost, Cambodia is one of the youngest nations in the world.

More than 65% of Cambodia’s population is younger than 30. The average age is 27.

Brokenness Persists

The effects of this immense loss can still be felt in the challenges of daily life. While Cambodia has experienced economic growth since the fall of the Khmer Rouge regime, 77% of the participants we register into our program in Cambodia live in households making less than $3.20 per day.

These impoverished families face deep physical need, lacking medical care, education and other life essentials. Yet their greatest need remains the gospel.

Most Cambodians still don’t know Jesus, and without him, true healing isn’t possible. Instead, devastating brokenness is passed from one generation to the next.

But hope is rising. Because of Christ and those willing to share him, children and families in desperate need can experience real transformation, inside and out.

The Fields in Cambodia Are Now Ripe for Harvest

Despite the shadows of deep national trauma and poverty, an entire generation is rising in search of more. They’re hungry for something new. For truth. For healing. For hope.

But only 2% of the population knows the life-changing hope and love found in Christ.

This spiritual poverty is a crisis that requires an immediate response. Cambodian pastors and church leaders are stepping forward to spread the gospel in their communities.

They all share a vision: More children and more families transformed by the love of Jesus.

But this vision is far bigger than their resources. And that’s why we, the global Church, must step in.

We Must Harvest When the Sun Shines

Jesus commanded us to make disciples of all nations (Matthew 28:19). As his Church, this is our moment to say yes. To strengthening Cambodian churches. To caring for vulnerable children. To restoring families.

To breaking the cycle of poverty — in every form — in Jesus’ name.

The sun is shining and the harvest is plentiful in Cambodia. The time is now to go, to love, to share the gospel and to witness Cambodia transformed forever by the hope found in Jesus.

He told them, “The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few. Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field.” — Luke 10:2, NIV

Compassion Cambodia Is Transforming a Nation With the Gospel

At Compassion, we believe that this nation scarred by trauma and loss can become one defined by joy, purpose and hope. And we’re committed to seeing that transformation through.

Compassion Cambodia is sharing the gospel in word and action by:

  • Introducing children and families to Jesus: Every child and family we serve is connected to a local church in their community, where they hear and experience the gospel.

  • Strengthening the Cambodian church: A flourishing church is the key to releasing children from poverty. That’s why we partner with local churches already rooted in and working within their communities, equipping them and their pastors with resources to continue caring for families with the love of Jesus.

  • Meeting the needs of children: At these local churches, children receive care for their physical, mental and emotional needs, from warm meals and medical care to education and disaster relief — all given in the name of Jesus.

  • Raising up leaders: Through youth empowerment programs, we equip youth with life skills, confidence and purpose, raising up leaders who can break the cycle of poverty — in all its forms.

  • Changing a generation in a generation: Through Compassion Nurturers, we deliver critical support moms and babies need from pregnancy to birth and until the child’s first birthday. By meeting the needs of the youngest in Cambodia, we build a foundation that can shape an entire generation with the love and hope of the gospel.

“Partnership with Compassion is like oil for our lamps. While the physical needs of participants are met, we remain committed to ensuring their souls are saved.” — Pastor Vanthoeurn

Bringing Christ to Cambodia: How You Can Help

Millions of hearts are longing for hope in Cambodia. The harvest is truly plentiful, but the workers are few. To bring Christ to Cambodia, we need you.

If you’re ready to answer the call, here are ways you can do so, starting today:

  • Pray: Will you join us in prayer? Pray for churches in Cambodia to grow strong. Pray for Cambodian pastors as they lead with courage. Pray for Cambodian church staff and volunteers as they share the gospel. And pray for children and families to encounter the life-changing love of Christ.

  • Become a Compassion Nurturer: Cambodia’s newest generation carries the possibility of a new future — one defined by the hope of Jesus. By becoming a Compassion Nurturer, you can help a mom and her baby reach the critical first birthday milestone. You’ll support both in becoming resilient followers of Jesus who can rise above poverty and lead their nation forward.

Pastors Are Already in the Field

Pastor Houn and other church leaders are actively sharing the gospel — but the work is just beginning. “…with Compassion’s support, we can reach even more children, help more families and share the love of Christ with those who need it most.”

Change a Generation From the Beginning

As a Compassion Nurturer, you care for a mom and her baby from the start. You’ll support both during pregnancy to birth and through the child’s first year. You can nurture two lives at once, shaping a brighter future for Cambodia’s next generation.
