Who is the Compassion Nurturers community?

Compassion Nurturers is a community dedicated to caring for moms and babies by empowering local churches to journey with them from pregnancy to birth and until the child’s 1st birthday. Compassion Nurturers can offer recurring or one-time gifts for at-risk moms and babies.

Where are the moms and babies located?

Moms and babies are served through the Compassion Nurturers centers, which are located in all countries served by Compassion International. Each year, the Compassion Nurturers storytelling journey follows moms and babies in focus countries such as Togo, Burkina Faso, Ethiopia, Kenya, Cambodia and Peru. These focus countries could change each year. Focus countries are places where moms and babies in extreme poverty face unique challenges: Many moms struggle to get adequate health care, and little ones are often born with dangerously low weights and are at risk of having stunted growth. For example, in the African countries listed, only 25% of moms receive enough prenatal care, compared to 65% of moms in poverty and more than 85% of moms in the U.S.

What exactly will my monthly Compassion Nurturers gift provide?

Your support enables Compassion’s local church partners to provide care during pregnancy and delivery, and through the first year of the baby’s life.   For moms:  An introduction to the gospel.  Prenatal care.  A delivery attendant.  Home visits and one-on-one motherhood coaching from an early childhood specialist.  Medical checkups.  Postnatal care.  Breastfeeding support and nutrition advice.  Income generation skills training.  A supportive moms group at the church.  For babies:  Individual prayers and support from staff.  Neonatal care at birth.  Monthly food supplies.  Doctor checkups.  Therapeutic feeding (if needed).  Diapers and blankets.  Stimulation exercises.  An equipped and healthy mom!

How does my gift make an impact?

All one-time and recurring gifts of any amount make an impact on these moms and babies. The following are suggested amounts:  $43/month or $516 nurtures   one mom and baby   up to the critical 1st birthday.   $86/month or $1,032 nurtures   two moms and babies   up to the critical 1st birthday.  $35/month or $420   contributes to   nurturing one mom and baby up to the critical 1st birthday.   $29/month or $348   contributes to   nurturing one mom and baby up to the critical 1st birthday.   $15,000 opens a Compassion Nurturers center for 15 mom/baby pairs.   $1,000   contributes     to   opening a Compassion Nurturers center.

Will I be paired with a specific mom and baby?

No, your donations will help support all moms and babies currently going through the Nurturers program. While all amounts are impactful, $43/month or a one-time gift of $516 is the amount needed to fully support one mom and baby through their first year.

Why can’t I be paired with a specific mom and baby?

The complexities and emotional weight of working with a mother who is pregnant or after she has given birth are such that including a sponsor relationship would be overwhelming to her and the staff.

What will I receive as a Compassion Nurturer?

Accepted Answer

Each year, all monthly and qualified one-time supporters will receive quarterly updates that include photos, letters and videos of mom and baby pairs as they experience pregnancy and delivery and through the first year with their little ones.  These updates demonstrate how moms and babies are progressing compared to key medical and developmental milestones, how moms are growing spiritually in the centers and other training moms receive such as income generation.  Although Nurturers serve moms and babies around the world, these impact stories feature moms and babies in three to five focus countries. This storytelling journey repeats annually with new moms and babies from different focus countries.  To celebrate the 1st birthday milestone, supporters will receive a special edition print piece with keepsake photos from birthday parties around the Nurturers centers. It’s a way to include our faithful supporters in the celebrations!

Since moms and babies are involved in the Compassion Nurturers center for one year, is that the length of my monthly commitment?

All monthly commitments are completely flexible. After one year, your continued donations will help nurture new moms and babies currently going through the program. No action would be needed on your part to continue as a Nurturer. And, of course, you are free to cancel your support at any time.

Can I specify which country I want to support with my Nurturers donation?

No. Your support powerfully benefits moms and babies in Compassion Nurturers centers around the world where help is needed most.

What happens after the first year ends?

We celebrate all the babies who have reached their 1st birthdays as strong, healthy little ones during your time as a Nurturer!   These little ones will graduate from the Nurturers center and will be enrolled in the sponsorship program.   Your continued donations will help nurture new moms and babies currently going through the program. No action would be needed on your part to continue as a Nurturer. And, of course, you are free to cancel your support at any time.

Can I choose to sponsor one of the kids whom I helped nurture to age 1?

While we can't guarantee that you can sponsor one of the specific children you helped nurture, we are happy to help you sponsor a 1-year-old from one of the focus countries or any country of your choosing.

What’s the difference between giving to Compassion Nurturers versus sponsoring a child?

Sponsorship is a commitment that helps a specific child over the age of 1 and includes a personal connection with the opportunity to exchange letters with them.  Compassion Nurturers is a community that nurtures moms and babies under the age of 1 through the critical first year of life, offering support, health care and training.   Compassion Nurturers is not a 1-1 relationship. Your support helps moms and babies registered at our Compassion Nurturers centers, but because of the complexities and emotional weight of working with a mother who is pregnant or after she has given birth, a 1-1 relationship would be overwhelming to her and the staff. Do you promote breastfeeding?

Compassion agrees with leading health experts that breastfeeding is the most effective nutrition for babies and helps with bonding. It is the first choice in feeding infants. However, there are circumstances where the mother cannot or should not feed her baby this way. In these cases, we work with the individual for appropriate solutions, including but not limited to formula.

What is the difference between Compassion Nurturers, Compassion Survival and gifts to Help Moms & Babies on your website?

Compassion Nurturers is a community of supporters who have an exclusive window into their impact through specific communications, stories, photos and experiences. These updates are our thank-you for your compassionate heart and commitment to nurturing vulnerable moms and babies!   Gifts to Survival and Help Moms & Babies     benefit the same programs in the field, but those giving opportunities are not linked to updates or reports on your impact, and they don’t specifically focus on the regions of greatest need like Nurturers.
