• Nurturers begins as a one-year experience. The year culminates in celebrating the babies who have reached their first birthday as strong, healthy little ones during your time as a Nurturer! After this first year, you can either sponsor a specific 1-year-old who has benefited from your support to the Nurturers program, or you can continue nurturing more moms and babies currently going through the program (another one-year commitment).

• Nurturers focuses on Kenya, Togo, Burkina Faso and Ethiopia, where moms and babies in extreme poverty face unique challenges: Many moms struggle to get adequate health care, and little ones are often born with dangerously low weights and are at risk of having stunted growth. For example, only 25% of moms in these four countries receive enough prenatal care, compared to 65% of moms in poverty and more than 85% of moms in the U.S.

For moms:

• An introduction to the gospel.
• Prenatal care.
• A delivery attendant.
• Home visits and one-on-one motherhood coaching from an Early Childhood Specialist.
• Medical checkups.

• Breastfeeding support and nutrition advice.
• Income generation skills training.
• A supportive moms group at the church.

For babies:

• Individual prayers and support from staff.
• Neonatal care at birth.
• Monthly food supplies.
• Doctor checkups.
• Therapeutic feeding (if needed).

• Stimulation exercises.
• An equipped and healthy mom!

The complexities and emotional weight of working with a mother during her pregnancy and right after childbirth are such that including a sponsor relationship would be overwhelming to her and the staff.

Compassion agrees with leading health experts that breastfeeding is the most effective nutrition for babies and helps with bonding. It is the first choice in feeding infants. However, there are circumstances where the mother cannot or should not feed her baby this way. In these cases, we work with the individual for appropriate solutions, including but not limited to formula.
