What the Bible Says About Compassion

What does the Bible say about compassion? Read Bible verses about our compassionate God and about what it means to show compassion to others.

Compassion isn’t just kindness or sympathy. Its meaning goes deeper.

The word “compassion” comes from the Latin compati, which means “to suffer with.” True compassion means entering into someone else’s heartbreak and allowing their pain to move us. True compassion changes the way we live.

“We must learn to regard people less in the light of what they do or omit to do, and more in the light of what they suffer.” — Dietrich Bonhoeffer

The Bible is filled with stories of compassion. Many compassionate Bible characters inhabit the pages of the Old Testament, and examples of the compassion of Jesus Christ are plentiful in the Gospels.

These stories challenge us as followers of Jesus. They reveal a God who sees suffering and draws near, and a Savior who suffers for the world. They’re also an invitation for us to act compassionately.

We’ve gathered Bible verses that reveal the heart of our compassionate God and show us what it means to live with that same compassion. May your compassion be encouraged and empowered by the truth of these scriptures.

All Bible references are written in NIV unless otherwise noted.

Therefore you did not desert them, even when they cast for themselves an image of a calf and said, “This is your God, who brought you up out of Egypt,” or when they committed awful blasphemies.
