Supporting the Well-Being of Children and Youth in High Poverty Contexts
Compassion partners with local services to address the physical and mental health needs of children and families.
Compassion’s well-being program aims to create a holistic approach to health that not only addresses immediate medical needs but also promotes long-term well-being and resilience in the communities they serve. The program focuses on several key areas.
Water and Sanitation (WaSH)
Ensuring access to clean water and proper sanitation facilities is a critical part of the program. This helps to prevent waterborne disease and improves overall community health.
Compassion relies on strategic technical partners to enable maximum efficiency and continuity for WaSH interventions that respond to locally led priorities. These interventions give special consideration to disability, environmental stewardship and child protection in planning and implementation.
Preventative Care and Medical Treatment
This includes working with local services to provide vaccinations, regular health checkups and education on critical practices to prevent the spread of diseases. In addition, Compassion provides access to medical care for children and their families.
Mental Health
Compassion International also addresses mental health by providing counseling and support for children and their families dealing with trauma, stress and other mental health issues.
Many mental health activities are supported by expert partnerships that strengthen local capacity to identify mental health conditions and deliver services. Partner examples include:
The Trauma Healing Institute represents an integration of mental health best practices and pastoral counseling.
Wheaton College’s Humanitarian Disaster Institutedelivers psychological and spiritual first aid to all program staff in all national offices. These efforts can be scaled to local church partners in crisis contexts.
Nutrition
The health program emphasizes the importance of proper nutrition. It includes providing nutritious meals, supplements, therapeutic feeding where needed and education on healthy eating habits to combat malnutrition and its effects.
HIV/AIDS Prevention and Treatment
Compassion’s activities focus on education, prevention and comprehensive support. For those living with HIV, Compassion offers access to antiretroviral therapy, medical care and nutritional support, as well as psychological counseling and economic assistance.
Free testing services and counseling ensure early detection and emotional support. Additionally, community awareness campaigns and workshops are implemented to spread accurate information and reduce stigma. These efforts create healthier, more resilient communities.
Education and Awareness
The program includes health education initiatives to raise awareness about common health issues, preventative measures and the importance of maintaining a healthy lifestyle.
