As a child sponsor, you’re providing the love and care a child needs to thrive. And did you know that you can do the same for their family?
When you give a family gift with Compassion, your donation will be wisely, thoughtfully and strategically spent to meet the critical needs of your sponsored child’s family.
How Do Family Gifts Work?
When you give, 90% of your donation goes straight toward the family gift itself. And instead of giving the funds directly to the family, local Compassion staff come alongside to help them identify the best way to use their gift.
Together, they select a gift that will provide long-term, life-changing support. Not only will you impact your sponsored child’s family, but you could impact generations to come.
4 Examples of Life-Changing Family Gifts
Supporters just like you have given incredible gifts to families all over the world. How have these gifts impacted their lives? Here are some inspiring examples.
1. A Boat
Ten-year-old Frank is a Compassion-supported child in Tanzania. His father, Jackson, makes a living for the family by fishing. Sadly, he once struggled to support his family because he didn’t own a boat. He had to rent one, which came at an incredible cost.
One day, the family received a generous family gift from Frank’s sponsor, which they used to purchase their own boat.
“We decided to buy a canoe because fishing is the thing that I know how to do best. Owning a canoe meant that I could make more money than I used to for my family.” — Jackson, Frank’s father
2. A Bicycle
Ten-year-old Novi from Indonesia has received multiple family gifts from her sponsor. Most recently, her family, with the assistance of the center staff, decided to buy Novi a bicycle using one of the gifts.
Now, Novi can get to and from her Compassion center safely and on her own, enabling her mother to go to work with assurance in her daughter’s safety.
“I can make more money and focus on finding customers since Novi has the bicycle. Every day she rides the bike to go to school and the center.” — Olin, Novi’s mother
3. A Home
Alice from Kenya had no place to call home. Heavy rain had washed her family’s house away. And with no money to rebuild, she and her brothers and sisters slept under a tarp.
When Alice’s sponsors gave her family a gift, they were able to get the materials needed to rebuild. Now, Alice has a safe place to live, play and study, so she can achieve her dreams.
“I want to be the most educated physiologist in Kenya!” — Alice
4. A Toilet
Little Natalie from Indonesia used to live in a home that had an open, unsafe toilet. But thanks to a generous family gift, Natalie and her family now have a new toilet. A few months after receiving this gift, the family received another gift that enabled them to build an entire bathroom.
“We had some needs to cover, but center staff helped us to decide which of our needs was a priority.” — Hetly, Natalie’s grandmother
Now, Natalie and her family have a safe place to care for their bodies, preventing illnesses and protecting their dignity.
Giving a family gift can provide livelihoods, safe places to rest, critical protection and beyond. If you’ve ever given a family gift, we say thank you! You’re helping create a ripple effect of change that will echo through the years.
