What Does the Bible Say About Goodness?
The Bible has a lot to say about goodness. In fact, “good” and “goodness” are found throughout the Old and New Testaments hundreds of times. Goodness is also a fruit of the Spirit, highlighting its importance in our lives.
But what does goodness mean? Let’s break it down.
Tov in Hebrew
In Old Testament Hebrew, the word for goodness is tov, which means to be good or pleasing. But it also translates to “do better” and “to make good.”
Agathosune in Greek
In New Testament Greek, the word for goodness is agathosune, which translates to virtue or beneficence. The word “beneficence” means to do good for others, improving their well-being.
Goodness Isn’t Just Being Good — It’s Doing Good
Both words point to a central truth: Goodness isn’t about just being good but doing good. Goodness is an action. It’s seeing those in need around us and doing what we can to fulfill their needs.
Goodness isn’t passive. It’s easy to think that “being good” simply means “not doing bad.” While that’s partially true, it’s only half the equation. To be good, we must act on behalf of those around us.
Think about our heavenly Father. Goodness is part of God’s character. While he doesn’t sin or “do bad,” he also does good, acting on our behalf.
He fed the Israelites with manna from heaven (Exodus 16:4), gave Ruth a bright future after loss (Ruth 2:12) and provided us with eternal hope in Jesus (John 3:16). And these are just a few examples of his goodness.

Goodness as a Fruit of the Spirit
But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law. — Galatians 5:22-23
As human beings, goodness doesn’t come naturally for us. Because of sin, we have a tendency to be selfish, focusing on ourselves instead of others. But God has called us out of sin, empowering us to become new creations in Christ.
Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come. The old has gone, the new is here! — 2 Corinthians 5:17, NIV
How are we made new? Through faith in Jesus and the work of the Holy Spirit inside of us. And how do we know the Holy Spirit is at work in us? We’ll see the fruit of the Spirit in our lives.
Goodness is a fruit of the Spirit. When we listen to the Holy Spirit and follow his leading, goodness will naturally flow from us. Instead of tearing down, we’ll encourage. Instead of hoarding our blessings, we’ll give generously.
And instead of ignoring the needs of those around us, we’ll do whatever we can to fulfill them.
The Bible shows us that goodness is both who God is and what he calls us to be. Goodness isn’t just being good; it’s doing good for those around us. Take a moment to reflect on what that means for you. Who can you bless? Who can you show goodness toward today?
