What Is Faithfulness in the Bible?
But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law. — Galatians 5:22-23, NIV
Faithfulness is a fruit of the Spirit, an important attribute of a godly life. But what does it mean to be faithful? In the Bible, there are two key words for “faithful,” including the Hebrew word emunah and the Greek word pistis.
Emunah: This Hebrew word, used throughout the Old Testament, translates to firmness, fidelity and steadfastness.
Pistis: This Greek word, used in the New Testament, means persuasion or credence, which is the belief or acceptance of something as true. Pistis also refers to conviction or being driven by unwavering belief.
Combining these two definitions, being “faithful” means standing firm with an unwavering belief in God. It means fully believing in the truth of who God is, remaining loyal to him despite our circumstances and following him to the end.
God is endlessly faithful to us. He is steadfast with an unwavering love that doesn’t change when we do. He’s loyal to us, sticking by our sides even when we turn our backs. We can trust our Father, and that trust inspires us to remain faithful to him.

Practical Ways to Practice Faithfulness Each Day
Faithfulness takes practice. It isn’t something we’ll be great at overnight. Luke 16:10 (KJV) says, “He that is faithful in that which is least is faithful also in much.”
When we’re faithful in the small, everyday things, we’ll grow in faithfulness to God in our lifelong walks with him. Here are some practical ways you can start cultivating faithfulness in your day-to-day life:
Practice daily spiritual disciplines: Read your Bible. Listen to worship music. Pray. These daily spiritual disciplines help keep your heart focused on God instead of the distractions around you.
Pray continually: 1 Thessalonians 5:17 instructs us to “pray continually.” Why? It’s God’s will for us, as it helps us build a relationship with him. It keeps our minds focused on him instead of the things of this world, helping us stay faithful despite our circumstances.
Remember God’s faithfulness to you: Take a moment each day to think about all the times God has been faithful to you or meditate on stories of God being faithful in Scripture. Remembering God’s faithfulness builds trust, which will grow your faith in him too.
Practice generosity: Volunteer at a local charity, give to a cause you care about or consider sponsoring a child in need. Generosity requires trust and surrender. Every time we give what we have to others, we say, “God, you’re my Provider.” And this repeated trust in God builds our faith in him over time.
If there’s one thing these Bible verses about faithfulness teach us, it’s this: God’s love for us is constant, his faithfulness to us unwavering. He never leaves us or forsakes us (Deuteronomy 31:6). We can put our trust in the One who never fails and follow him to the end.
