In Ethiopia, Eskedar was shocked when she and her husband tested positive for HIV. The stigma of the disease destroyed their small business. Then, when her husband passed away, Eskedar and her son were devastated — both emotionally and financially. But thanks to friends like you who gave, the local Compassion center where Eskedar’s son was registered stepped in with medical support, food supplements and income generation training. With Compassion’s help, Eskedar was able to start a new business, and she joined an HIV support group at the center to help her process her diagnosis. “We bring up different issues and discuss them together,” she says. “I found good community here.” Eskedar is now passing on the strength she received from the center to help others. She even received an award from Ethiopia’s Minister of Women and Children for her work raising awareness about HIV/AIDS in her community. “I want to help people,” she says. “I don’t want my life to be shameful.
