Our sponsor tours are packed full of experiences that will change your life. Nicaragua is a country that has been through a lot in its history. Yet it is so beautiful in natural scenery and filled with friendly beautiful people. In the midst of this are evangelical churches that are partnering with Compassion. You will get an introduction to all Compassion’s core programs so you will come away with the complete overview of our work.
You may not be the sponsor of any children at the development centers we visit but when you see how excited they get you’ll begin to understand the importance of that partnership with the local church. You are an incredible part of that! As we visit homes you will see that letters from their sponsors are treasured and many have the photos on their wall. Visiting with a few families we get more of an idea of what their lives are like each day. Yes, we are blessed no matter what our circumstances are. The ultimate highlight is the day you spend with your sponsored child. Oh what an amazing experience!
It is great to go and visit on your own but there is nothing like coming together as a group with the same heart and experiencing it together. This is an investment that will last a lifetime for you and those you visit. You come to bless them but you will come away with a bigger blessing. I trust that you will read the itinerary, look at your child’s photo and last letter, and then prayerfully consider this tour. Hopefully we’ll meet and travel to Nicaragua together next fall.

Day 1: Getting Started
Thursday, October 2: There is a festive spirit of anticipation as we gather at the American Airlines departure gate at Miami International Airport. Our early evening flight takes us into Managua where we quickly gather our luggage, greet our Nicaraguan hosts, board our bus, and travel to our hotel. Checking into our rooms we have time to get settled and have a good night’s rest.
Day 2: Getting Prepared
Friday, October 3: Today we travel to the Compassion office where we meet all the amazing people who oversee the different aspects of our work in Nicaragua. After devotions together the country director and management team give us more details on each of the programs operating here. With time for our questions we begin to see just how important it is for us to get a good foundation to what we will be seeing and experiencing. Then it’s time to visit the different departments and actually see all it takes to get the work done. It so fun to see where our letters arrive and are translated as well as where the children’s’ letters wait to go to Colorado and on to you. After a delicious traditional Nicaraguan lunch together we’re off for a tour of the city.
Days 3 and 4: Getting Involved
Saturday and Sunday, October 4 and 5: This is when we really see Compassion and the local church in action. We will visit a child development center where they are learning the core aspects of our program including spiritual so they can become fulfilled Christian adults. An important part is the complementary interventions or special funds given to support other needs. We will spend time with beneficiaries hearing and seeing how they are using these funds and the incredible difference it is making in their daily lives. This is another important way the children are released from poverty and it’s in Jesus’ name. Nicaragua is just beginning their child survival program for mothers and babies so we can be an encouragement there. Then they are also just starting the Leadership Development Program for young people who have completed our program, applied, and been selected for this one that goes along with university education. You can play a part in sharing your enthusiasm to launch this great program. How exciting to see all 4 different parts of Compassion.
Day 5: Getting Emotional
Monday, October 6: Getting emotional? Yes, meeting your sponsored child is incredibly emotional! There is nothing like it and you both will be forever changed. During fun activities as well as the quiet times you will get to know each other at a deeper personal level. After lunch and sharing your gifts then it’s time for those parting thoughts, special encouragement, and prayer together. Now do you think you’re making a difference in your child’s life? Are you someone special to them?
Day 6: Getting Ready
Tuesday, October 7: Getting ready to go home we find packing our suitcase is the easy part. It’s leaving that is hard. How will we feel when we arrive back home? We have a story to tell. When people ask if sponsorship works all we have to do is tell our first-hand experiences of these days we spent in Nicaragua. Do they see a difference in us? Yes, I believe they do. You are changed and you will continue to change the world for these children.
In order to ensure our children's protection and determine eligibility to travel with Compassion, we now require all travelers (over the age of 18) to complete a criminal background check to ensure the safety of the children in our programs.
Please visit Screening One Sponsor Tour BC to complete your online background check at the time of registration. If you are unable to complete this online, please contact us and we will send you a paper form for you to fill out and return. Compassion uses a third party vendor, Screening One to process background checks. The results of your background check are confidential and all personal information is encrypted and secure.
