The historic city of Quito is lined with beautiful plazas, 17th-century churches, and beautifully restored historic homes. Wandering the cobblestone streets surrounded by architectural treasures from Spanish colonial days is an inspiring way to delve into Ecuador’s past. You will travel further back as we visit the rural area of Riobamba. Beyond the cityscape, the rural landscape unfolds in all its startling variety. There are Andean villages renowned for their colorful textiles and sprawling markets, lush forests and jungles and the remote settlements of the indigenous people who initially made Ecuador their home. The daily market transforms Riobamba into a hive of commercial activity, when thousands of people from surrounding villages come to barter, buy and sell. They flood into town by truck, cart, donkey and foot, unloading impossibly giant loads and spreading out their wares along the streets. It’s a sight to behold! Our urban and rural experience will give you a full and complete picture of the old and the new in this extraordinarily diverse country.

Along with understanding the history and beauty of the country you will also learn about the work of Compassion. After almost 40 years of work with the local church we are seeing amazing changes in the growth and sustainable development of communities. Children are being released form poverty and you will see it with your own eyes! You will also see:

  • The work of the Country Office in the city of Quito that fuels the training and growth throughout the country
  • Leadership Development students changing their communities with the education they have received through Compassion’s program
  • Young babies and mothers learning how to grow and be healthy amidst the harsh realities of poverty and thriving in local church community
  • Children being transformed by the love of Jesus through local schooling and Compassion’s program
  • Your sponsored child! You will have an entire day together to connect in deeper ways than you ever hoped or imagined!

I know this trip will change your perspective on the world, on the country of Ecuador and instill a passion for the poor as you partner with Compassion! Join us, won’t you? You will be blessed more than you can imagine!

Day 1: Starting our Journey
Our mid afternoon flight to Quito will provide us both enough time to travel from home to Miami but also an early enough arrival in country that we get much needed rest for the adventure ahead. Once we arrive at the gate we’ll get to know each other and prepare for what God has in store!

Day 2: Compassion’s Program Firsthand
We’ll begin by understanding the work of Compassion’s program as we visit the country office and hear from the incredibly dedicated staff! Any and all questions you have about how our program is implemented, what our letter process looks like, reviewing financials and following the progress of the children – this is the place to hear the answers you’ve been waiting for!

Day 3-5: Learning and Serving
Our team will travel to the area of Riobamba to visit a variety of child development centers to learn how Compassion is developing the lives of children in this rural setting. Along the way we’ll have opportunities to provide vacation bible school type activities as a team, complete a needed service project in a local community and experience a typical day in the life of a Compassion child to better equip us with the knowledge and experience to appreciate the challenges they face.

Day 6: Child Fun Day
Anticipation has been building for our child fun day! Today, we’ll spend time making memories and building and even stronger relationship with our sponsored children. We’ll be back in Quito to meet the children at a fun location specifically chosen to make them confortable and have plenty of great activities for you to do together. A caregiver, project staff member and a personal translator will be with you as well to increase communication and bless your time together!

Day 7: A Little Relaxation!
Today is a day to absorb and unwind from all we’ve seen. To give some space and room for you to really process your experience, we will see some local historic sights and visit the outdoor markets! At our hotel this evening we will share all that is on our heart with out new family – the sponsors that you have shared your week with!

Day 8: Returning Home
We leave mid morning for our trip back to Miami and on to our separate connecting flights. What a great experience we’ve had together!
