Each year, one out of every 58 babies will die before they turn 1 month old. Many of these deaths are preventable, happening because of poor care at birth or poor treatment in the early days of life. In countries with high infant mortality rates, a newborn can be up to 10 times more likely to die than one born in high-income countries.
We've identified four high priority countries where the need for our Compassion Survival Program is especially significant: Burkina Faso, Haiti, Ethiopia and Togo. We determined this using our Compassion Survival Priority Index, which objectively measures and compares Survival need across all of Compassion's program countries. The index was formulated using WHO, UNICEF and UNESCO data. The index considers factors like infant mortality rate, maternal mortality ratio, stunting prevalence, hepatitis B immunization, rates of low birthweight and births attended by a skilled attendant.
2.4 million babies die before they turn 1 month old.
83% of all child deaths under the age of 5 occur in sub-Saharan Africa (58%) and South Asia (26%).
Five million children around the world died before reaching their 5th birthday in 2020.
We’ve developed specialized programs that help moms through childbirth and the child’s critical first year. Currently, more than 2,200 Frontline Church Partners are providing this crucial program to moms and babies in their communities. We hope to open 481 new Survival Centers within the next two years, especially in the four Compassion countries where infant death rates are the highest. With your help, we can reach more pregnant women and moms of babies under 1 with the essential nutrition, regular medical exams and childcare instruction they need to ensure their little ones survive and thrive during their first critical months of life.
