Accommodations

Our trip leaders and in-country staff are hard at work planning this trip, and while we may not have a hotel chosen just yet, it is important to us that you have an understanding of the type of accommodations that we typically choose.

Compassion carefully selects the lodging for each trip, which is determined by many variables, such as safety, menu, location and amenities. It is the pleasure of our field staff to search out perfect accommodations for each trip. Because they have relationships with hotels in their areas, they are often able to secure venues that offer Compassion generous discounts because of our frequent trips and our overall mission.

Most hotels we utilize for Sponsor Trips are equivalent to United States’ four-star hotels (or higher).

Country's Culture

Weather

Rwanda is only two degrees south of the equator, but its high altitude means temperatures are seldom extreme (generally 70’s F during the day and 60’s at night).

  • The high mountains can sometimes expect frost.
  • July through September, also January, are the dry seasons.
  • Heavy downpours can occur daily during the rainy seasons, but after the rains, the day may be sunny.
Food

Restaurants serve what’s locally available – beans, rice, potatoes, cabbage and some meat, the latter often in the form of brochettes (grilled kebabs).

  • Tilapia is popular for those who live near lakes and have access to fish.
  • The potato was thought to be introduced by German and Belgian colonists.
  • The markets sell very sweet bananas, as well as papayas, cucumbers, tomatoes and avocadoes.
Helpful Tips

The National Memorial Cemetery for genocide victims now covers the grounds of the once luxurious Rebero Horizon hotel.

  • Cash is needed for almost everything, although some Kigali hotels accept Mastercard.
  • Individual Rwandans should not be referred to as Hutu or Tutsi, nor should their past be probed into, as most lost family members during the genocide.
