JUDITH’S STORY How sponsorship changes lives

Deep in an urban slum in the outskirts of Manila, Philippines — lives 7-year-old Judith.

Life is difficult here. Poverty is rampant. Hopelessness abounds.

Meet 7-year-old Judith of the Philippines. She lives in poverty in the slums of Manilla, but her life is being transformed through child sponsorship.

Home for Judith and her family is an 8' x 12' room located deep inside a ramshackle of poorly constructed homes — multiple stories of cardboard, plywood and corrugated metal, much more like a child's fort or a “house of cards.”

To get to her home, Judith enters through a narrow hallway off the main street. Darkness envelopes her as she moves deeper into the structure. Sunlight does not penetrate here. The concrete floor is wet with sewage. The air is stagnant and hot. Stifling. Up a makeshift ladder to the next level. Families peer out from their “front doors” and greet her as she passes. Down another hallway and up another ladder.

Judith's home is made of cardboard, plywood and corrugated metal.

Finally Judith is home and is greeted by her elderly grandparents, Ricardo and Carmelita.

Judith’s mother Jacqueline is “missing.” A “disgraced woman," according to Judith's grandfather, who fell victim to drugs and the street life. She returns home only after having another pregnancy, to drop another baby with her parents.

Judith’s grandfather was born in this community 60 years ago. He’s been in this same home for 50 years. Judith’s mother was also born in this house. As was Judith. Four generations stuck in poverty.

To provide for Judith and her seven siblings, Judith’s grandfather earns P100 ($2USD) per day as a pedicab driver. But it’s barely enough to survive on, nothing is left to improve their situation or lift this family out of poverty.

But despite the difficulties of life here, there is HOPE ...

Judith’s grandmother attends the local church and is the one who learned about Compassion.

Through the Compassion program at this church, Judith receives nutritious food, medical care, access to school and more. She’s also learned of Jesus and His great love for her.

Sponsorship has made all the difference for Judith.

“My prayer for my grandchildren,” shared Judith’s grandfather, Ricardo, “is that they will all finish school before I die.”
