Peru Trip

Your Trip to Peru

With magnificent landscapes, amazing archaeological treasures and quaint colonial charm, it is no wonder that Peru tops the list of “must-see” locations for many travelers. For sponsors like you, there is another reason that Peru calls: the opportunity to meet that precious child you have been so faithfully supporting, praying for and corresponding with! Join this fully guided, eight-day trip to meet and spend an entire day with your sponsored child (or children!) and experience in person Compassion’s dynamic, 35-year-old ministry in Peru.

Focused in the capital city of Lima, as well as another location still being determined by our Compassion Peru staff, this tour will immerse you in the full range of our ministry programs, starting with Survival, which rescues the youngest, most vulnerable babies. At church-based Compassion centers, you will also see Child Sponsorship in action and meet youth who are preparing to graduate from our program as self-sufficient young adults. A tour of the national office will introduce you to the dedicated staff that keep the ministry operating smoothly throughout Peru. And visits to children’s homes will provide a clear picture of the important role that sponsors and friends like you play in bringing help and hope to the children and families served by Compassion in Peru.

We would love for you to join us on this life-changing trip to beautiful Peru! Please take a moment to read through the itinerary and prayerfully consider signing up.

Accommodations

Our trip leaders and in-country staff are hard at work planning this trip, and while we may not have a hotel chosen just yet, it is important to us that you have an understanding of the type of accommodations that we typically choose.

Compassion carefully selects the lodging for each trip, which is determined by many variables, such as safety, menu, location and amenities. It is the pleasure of our field staff to search out perfect accommodations for each trip. Because they have relationships with hotels in their areas, they are often able to secure venues that offer Compassion generous discounts because of our frequent trips and our overall mission.

Most hotels we utilize for Sponsor Trips are equivalent to United States’ four-star hotels (or higher).

Country's Culture

Weather

Peru has many climates. In the Andes, fleece jackets are essential for the plummeting night temperatures, as is a warm hat during the day with the high UV radiation.

  • Rainiest months in the mountains are October through April.
  • Sweaters or heavy jackets are best in the Cusco and Machu Picchu areas.
  • In Lima and on the coast, days can be balmy and nights can be cool.
Food

Most Peruvian dishes are highly seasoned and can be hot and spicy, although not always. A Peruvian specialty is ceviche de corvina, served cold.

  • Lunch begins around noon to 1p.m. and dinner is around 8 p.m., with a late snack around 5 p.m.
  • Lomo saltado is a hearty beef, vegetable and rice dish found on almost every Peruvian menu.
Helpful Tips

Electricity is sporadic in most medium-sized and small towns, so be prepared that you may not have hot water available, even in some hotels.

  • Relaxing too much while shopping in plazas can leave you vulnerable to being pickpocketed.
  • Please carry toilet tissue for public restrooms and dispose of all toilet tissue in the wastebaskets.
