Join us for this exciting trip of a lifetime! We invite you to spend an amazing week of spiritual insight and renewal on the “Women of Joy – To the DR With Love Tour”! This eight-day tour, a partnership between Compassion and Phil Waldrep Ministries, is especially for women like you with a passion to grow closer to God. And, while it is a Women of Joy trip, it doesn’t mean men are not allowed! You are invited to travel solo, with a group of girlfriends, make it a mother/daughter adventure or bring your spouse along. What an incredible opportunity for a vacation with a purpose!

Based in beautiful and historic Santo Domingo, the DR’s capital city, this trip will take you to church-based Compassion child development centers to see first hand how Dominican children are given the resources and learning opportunities they need to create a future free from poverty. Interacting with the children, serving them lunch, and visiting and praying with them in their homes will give you a clear appreciation of just how important caring friends like you are to these children and their families. The highlight of your Compassion experience in the DR will be the day you meet and spend time with your own sponsored child!

In addition to experiencing the work of Compassion, you’ll also have the opportunity to discover the cultural and natural beauty of the Dominican Republic. We will explore cobblestone streets and colorful markets, sit by the Caribbean sea, and connect with like-hearted travelers. And, at the end of the trip you will have the unique opportunity to be a part of the very first international Women of Joy conference and worship alongside women and girls from the DR!

Trip Itinerary

Day 1, Sunday: Travel to Santo Domingo, DR

Joy and excitement will be in the air as we meet our Compassion guide and Women of Joy traveling companions at our American Airlines departure gate in the Miami International Airport. Together, we will board a late-afternoon flight to Santo Domingo, the Dominican Republic’s capital city. Arriving about 9:30 p.m., we will be met by representatives from Compassion DR’s National Office, who will escort us to our hotel for the week and help us check in.

Day 2, Monday: Experience the Compassion Survival Initiative

After a good night’s sleep and hearty breakfast, we will be off to see the Survival Initiative in action. This program, operated by local churches in partnership with Compassion, serves pregnant women and mothers of babies through age 1. We will hear from the moms about how this important program provides them the resources and training they need to ensure that their little ones survive and thrive during the first critical days and months of life.

We will also visit some of the program moms’ homes for a firsthand understanding of the obstacles they face on a daily basis because of poverty. They will appreciate our hugs and words of encouragement for their efforts to raise healthy, happy little ones in this difficult context. And if you’re missing a little one back home, then you will especially enjoy holding some of the precious babies we meet today!

Day 3, Tuesday: Visit a Child Development Center, Interact With the Children

Tuesday’s agenda focuses on the Child Sponsorship Program, the heart of Compassion’s ministry. We will visit a local church that operates a child development center much like the one your own sponsored child attends. The staff will give us a red-carpet tour and share details about the program, including how financial and children’s records are kept. They will also explain how the program curriculum is designed to develop children in all facets of life: physical, educational, relational and spiritual.

In addition, we will take time to join the children in some of their program activities. Be ready to listen to Bible stories, make crafts, play games and more as you interact with these young lives, whose smiles and laughter will be some of our favorite memories of this special trip.

Later, we will visit some of the children’s homes to meet and encourage their families. It will be inspiring to hear their caregivers’ testimonies about the help and hope that Compassion sponsorship brings to the entire family.

Day 4, Wednesday: Sightseeing & Shopping

Today, we will be immersed in the vibrant Dominican culture as we enjoy some sightseeing and tourist activities around Santo Domingo. From the magnificent walls of the New World’s oldest surviving European fortress to the cobblestone streets and beautiful architecture of the colonial district, there is a lot to experience in this bustling city. We will also visit a local artisan market to shop for those unique, handcrafted souvenirs that will be special reminders of our time together in the Caribbean!

Day 5, Thursday: Spend the Day with Your Sponsored Child!

Finally, the day you have been eagerly awaiting all week long has arrived — the day you meet your Dominican sponsored child in person! You and your child will meet at the Club Fiesta Campestre water park for an entire day of playing together and getting to know each other in a way that’s possible only through a personal visit. A translator will be on-hand to ensure easy communication with your child, but the sparkle in their eyes and joy in their smiles will certainly need no translation! Your time together will fly by, but the memories you make today will have a life-long impact on you both.

Day 6, Friday: Fun in the Sun, Craft Fair, Women of Joy Banquet

Relaxation and reflection top Friday’s agenda. Enjoy time splashing in the hotel pool, strolling along the beautiful beach or just soaking up the Caribbean atmosphere! You can also visit a craft fair to see the handiwork of Compassion caregivers who are learning new skills to help generate income for their families.

The day will be topped off by an unforgettable Women of Joy evening banquet hosted by Phil Waldrep Ministries. In addition to a delicious meal, we will be inspired by an outstanding speaker, who will prepare our hearts and minds for tomorrow’s exciting conference.

Day 7, Saturday: Women of Joy Conference

The inspiration will continue in abundance all day Saturday as we gather on our last day in the Dominican Republic to praise God and experience the joy of pursuing a deeper relationship with Christ! Our experiences of the past week and the friendships we have made will be a meaningful backdrop to this day of renewal, led by such powerful speakers as Lisa Harper, Margaret Feinberg, Liz Curtis Higgs and Christine Caine. Our worship time will be led by the amazing Lilly Goodman, as we take our connection with Jesus to the next level!

Day 8, Sunday: Travel Home

It will be hard to say goodbye to each other and to this country we have come to love when we return to the airport on Sunday morning for a return flight, arriving in Miami a little after 10 a.m. From there, we will catch our individual connecting flights home where, no doubt, our family and friends will be amazed by the changes that God has worked in our hearts during this special trip to the DR.

Full Trip Price: $2,485 (before 10/1/2018)/$2,985 (after 10/1/2018) per person for double occupancy

Single Supplement: $500
The fee for single room occupancy is to be paid with your initial deposit and is refundable up to 30 days prior to the trip start date.

Additional Child Fee: $180 per child
Meeting three (3) of your sponsored children are included in your trip cost.

Trip Deposit: $350 per person

Final Payment Amount: $2,135/$2,635 per person

Due to frequent airline changes, we recommend waiting until 6-8 weeks prior to the trip to purchase your airfare to the gateway city.

  • international airfare from the gateway city to the destination booked under a group contract by Compassion

  • all in-country transportation costs from buses to in-country flights to varying destinations within the country you are visiting

Not Included in the Trip Price

  • domestic ticket cost from your hometown for you and your guests to meet at the gateway city
  • fuel surcharges
  • travel documents such as passports and visas
  • immunizations
  • baggage fees, including fees related to exceeding weight limits or number of pieces allowed
  • additional snacks, mini-bar, shopping, gifts for your child or souvenirs purchased in-country
  • Internet, phone calls or laundry services while traveling
  • transportation to and from the airport if you choose to fly “Land Only” apart from the Compassion group

Cancellation/Deviation Policy
In the event that you need to cancel your trip, please refer to our cancellation policy below:

  • All deposits are nonrefundable.
  • Fifty percent of the trip cost will be required for cancellations 59–31 days prior to the sponsor trip.
  • One hundred percent of the trip cost will be required for cancellations 30–0 days prior to the sponsor trip. Although rare, in the event that Compassion feels it is necessary to cancel a trip, a full refund will be given to anyone who has already applied a payment to Compassion for their trip cost.
  • Full participation from each attendee is required for the entirety of the scheduled trip experience. We do not allow participants to deviate from the trip agenda and, as a result, do not reimburse for days skipped due to personal itineraries.
Terms and Conditions

BACKGROUND CHECK In order to ensure our children’s protection and determine eligibility to travel with Compassion, we now require all travelers over the age of 18 to complete a criminal background check to ensure the safety of the children in our programs. Compassion uses a third-party vendor, ScreeningOne, to process all background checks. The results of your background check are confidential, and all personal information is encrypted and secure. Compassion reserves the right to not permit a traveler to go on a trip or rescind eligibility at any time even if the traveler’s background check was preliminarily approved.

AIR TRANSPORTATION and FUEL SURCHARGES Air transportation as included in the trip is based on economy-class transportation and is subject to all rules and regulations governing these fares. Fuel surcharges are added on a per-ticket basis at time of confirmation. In the event these surcharges are higher than budget estimates, we may require additional funds to cover these increased surcharges. We will communicate any pricing changes immediately.

CANCELLATIONS In the event that you need to cancel your trip, please refer to our cancellation policy below:

  • All deposits are nonrefundable.
  • Fifty percent of the trip cost will be required for cancellations 59-31 days prior to the sponsor trip.
  • One hundred percent of the trip cost will be required for cancellations 30-0 days prior to the sponsor trip.

MINIMUM PARTICIPANTS: On each trip, we have a designated minimum of participants. If we are unable to fill the trip to the required amount of participants, we will be forced to cancel or reschedule the trip for another date. In the event of a cancellation, we will communicate as early as possible, and all deposits will be refunded.

IMPORTANT NOTICE: Compassion International reserves the right to adjust or alter any travel program when necessary or desirable for the protection, safety or improvement of said travel program, or when local conditions do not permit operation as published. Compassion International reserves the right to accept or deny participants application at our sole discretion.

RESPONSIBILITY: Compassion International makes arrangements with airlines, hotels and other independent parties to provide you with the travel services you purchase. These parties are independent suppliers over whom we have no direct control. We are not responsible for any claims, losses, damages, costs or expenses arising out of injury, accident or death; damage, loss or delay of baggage or other property; or delay, inconvenience, loss of enjoyment, upset, disappointment, distress or frustration, whether physical or mental, resulting from (1) the act or omission of any party other than Compassion International or its employees; (2) mechanical breakdown, government actions, weather or other factors beyond our control; (3) failure to obtain documents, passports, visas and health certificates valid through the date of reentry, when required, in which case a cancellation charge will be assessed; (4) failure to follow instructions including but not limited to check-in and checkout times and baggage handling; (5) cancellation or change for any reason in the travel services offered; and (6) medical or health problems or physical disabilities. Compassion International reserves the right to cancel or alter the travel services at its discretion, except as otherwise noted herein. In the event of change, Compassion International will try to substitute comparable services; in the event of complete cancellation by Compassion International, we shall refund all monies paid to us. Compassion International will not be responsible for any other cost incurred by participants.

Your trip administrator is Heather Tredoux, who is experienced with overseas travel and is happy to answer your pre-trip and registration questions! Our trip leaders spend the majority of their time traveling, so Heather will be your main contact during the time before your trip, and will make sure you have the information you need to be fully prepared for your journey.

Our trip leaders and in-country staff are hard at work planning this trip, and while we may not have a hotel chosen just yet, it is important to us that you have an understanding of the type of accommodations that we typically choose in Dominican Republic.

Compassion carefully selects the lodging for each trip, which is determined by many variables, such as safety, menu, location and amenities. It is the pleasure of our field staff to search out perfect accommodations for each trip. Because they have relationships with hotels in their areas, they are often able to secure venues that offer Compassion generous discounts because of our frequent trips and our overall mission.

Most hotels we utilize for Sponsor Trips are equivalent to United States’ four-star hotels (or higher). Below we have listed commonly used hotels in for your reference:

Country's Culture

Constant breezes keep the temperature and humidity fairly tolerable, though Santo Domingo can be extremely muggy in the summer.

  • Best travel time is November through March.
  • Rainiest months are May through October, when hurricanes are possible.
  • Mountains in the west are considerably cooler.
  • The southwest desert, while drier, can get hot in daytime.

Dominican food is never what you expect. It tends to be heavier than most Caribbean fare, largely because of the popularity of mashed starches.

  • Bandera dominicana is the national dish, which consists of shredded beef served with rice, red beans, salad and fried plantains.
  • Mangu is a favorite dish, usually eaten at breakfast.
  • Mofongo is made with pork cracklings, plantains and garlic.
Helpful Tips

Long pants and closed-toe shoes help provide extra protection against mosquitoes. Consider wearing flip-flops in the shower to avoid microscopic parasitic worms.

  • Dominicans are never in a hurry.
  • A flashlight is handy in case of power failures.
  • Loose-fitting cotton clothes are a must, but don’t wear shorts in cities.
  • Be aware of your surroundings, always securing your wallet/purse.
