Update #1: March 17, 2020
The situation has worsened in Piripiri as the rains have not yet stopped. So far, 23 beneficiaries have been affected. The affected beneficiaries and their families have been supported by relatives, the local agencies, as well as the Child Development Centers (CDCs) which provided donated clothing and mattresses. The CDCs have also provided food, water, and personal hygiene items using Compassion Crisis Relief funds.
Please pray for the safety of all beneficiaries in this area and provision for the affected beneficiaries and their families.
Disaster Alert: March 11, 2020
Heavy rains and flooding are affecting the city of Piripiri in the State of Piaui in northeastern Brazil. Homes and bridges have been damaged and there is a risk that rivers will overflow. Travel on roads is difficult. The local City Council declared a state of public calamity. Local agencies are providing shelter, baskets, mattresses, mosquito nets, and filters for affected families.
At this time, no impact details are available. The Child Development Center and Compassion staff are visiting beneficiaries to assess the impact.
