The situation in Joao Pessoa has now stabilized and the local schools that were closed have reopened. In total, one Child Development Center (CDC) and 61 beneficiaries were affected. The affected beneficiaries have returned to their homes, relatives homes or are living in new homes provided by the government. They are adjusting to normal day to day life. The CDC is now open with full programming and continues to support the beneficiaries.

Update #2: June 25, 2019

The heavy rain has stopped, but the situation is still very critical in Joao Pessoa. Many families are still living in temporary shelters such as schools and churches. The local government continues efforts to relocate the affected families to housing provided by the government. No additional beneficiaries or Child Development Centers (CDCs) have been affected. The CDCs continue to provide water, food, mattresses, and clothes to the beneficiaries and their families using Compassion Disaster Relief Funds.

Update #1: July 18, 2019

The situation in the city of Joao Pessoa remains critical, as there were four days of continuous heavy rain and the river overflowed. It has been recorded as the highest volume of rain in the last 30 years. Government officials have inspected the houses that have been damaged by the rains and flooding. Many families are homeless and living in temporary shelters such as local schools and churches. So far one Child Development Center (CDC) and 61 beneficiaries have been affected. The CDC continues to provide disaster assistance (water and relief supplies) to affected families.

Disaster Alert: June 17, 2019

Heavy rains have caused flooding in the city of Joao Pessoa in the State of Paraiba, Brazil. So far, one Child Development Center (CDC) and 25 beneficiaries have been affected. The CDC lost all its furniture and documents. The Compassion Disaster Relief Fund is being used to help the CDC replace the furniture and provide beneficiaries and families with food, drinking water, hygiene products, clothes and mattresses. Affected families are temporarily staying in local schools or with relatives.
