Stinky Feet

Stinky Feet

Do you wear sandals? Maybe you call them flip flops, thongs or zories. In New Zealand they call them jandals and in South Africa, they’re called plakkies. In Jesus’ day, people wore sandals too and they walked long distances on dusty roads. All that dust made their feet really dirty. Jesus used His disciples’ stinky, dirty feet to teach them an important lesson.

It was the night of Passover and Jesus met with His disciples for the Passover meal. During this occasion each year, the Jewish people remembered when God saved them from the plague of death and then led them out of Egypt. Jesus chose to observe the Passover with his disciples. It was during this meal that Jesus showed His disciples what it meant to be a servant.

The disciples had recently been arguing about who was greatest. They all wanted to be numero uno! So when Jesus stooped down to wash their feet, they were really surprised. You see, in that culture, only a servant would wash someone’s feet. To them, Jesus was their leader and teacher, not their servant! He wanted them to see that a true leader is someone who is humble.

Did you know one of the reasons Jesus came to earth was so we can know how to live? In fact, in Mark 10:45, we learn His main mission: "For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many." Jesus wants us to follow His example and be a humble servant to help others see the love of Jesus.
