The first step is deciding what is important to you and what you value. There are many child sponsorship organizations fighting child poverty, and each organization has areas it focuses on and excels in.

Suggestions for what to consider

Research Your Options

Once you’ve determined what’s important to you, it’s time to find the organization that best matches your values and priorities.

Ask the organizations you're interested in these six questions.

And visit each organization's website to learn:

  • How child sponsorship fits into it the organization's mission
  • How the organization handles its finances
  • The cost to sponsor a child
  • What sponsors say about their sponsorship experience

Check the charity’s ratings with top watchdog organizations, such as: Charity Navigator, Charity Watch, and Guidestar.

Sponsor a Child Through the Website

Look on the charity’s website to find the navigation link or tab that says Sponsor a Child. Clicking on the link will take you to a page where you can view children waiting to be sponsored.

Write Letters. Regularly.

The last step goes beyond how to choose a charity and how to select a child to sponsor. This step is about what is involved with sponsoring a child.

Letter writing is the primary activity sponsors use to engage with their sponsored children.
