Connect With Your Child

In 1997, Compassion initiated "It Works," a pilot project to document the progress of Compassion children in the countries where we work. We began in several countries, including the Philippines, to interview and photograph children and their families. Our goal was to obtain overviews of the children's current situations and return in five to seven years to follow up. Here are some of photos and the story of Evelyn Fortu — both then and now:

THEN
Evelyn Fortu, Philippines

Enrolled in Compassion's Philippines program in 1998, Evelyn Fortu was shy and had little to smile about.

Evelyn Fortu's family

Her family lived in a squatter area outside Bacolod, and Evelyn's father, a carpenter with no steady employment, was barely able to support his wife and six children.

The bright smile and social ease 13-year-old Evelyn displays today are poignant reminders that children change dramatically in five years.
