For example, during the Kenyan riots earlier in 2008, Lucy Nduta certainly needed shelter. Her house in flames, Lucy and her daughter Miriam fled to the Mathare North Church, a Compassion church partner and the only sanctuary in the neighborhood. There they received emergency food and water.
Still, Lucy's eyes were burning from the smoke of the fires and she couldn't see. Because Compassion's Child Sponsorship Program includes a health component, a health specialist was at the church to greet Lucy. A quick examination allowed the church to offer Lucy what she needed beyond food and water — her eyesight.
