Print  Send this to a friend

UPDATE: March 14, 2008 - Although homes, fences and crops were damaged when Cyclone Sidr made landfall in Bangladesh, all Compassion-assisted children, families and staff members are safe, healthy and accounted for. Some Compassion child development centers report uninhabitable conditions and funds are being provided for the reconstruction efforts.

Many child development centers were heavily damaged during the disaster, with kitchens, pastoral homes, buildings and staff housing either collapsing or being completely destroyed.

Please pray for the reconstruction efforts in Bangladesh.

Compassion Bangladesh will provide update as information becomes available.

Compassion International will contact you if your sponsored child has been affected.

UPDATE: Nov. 30, 2007 - The damage caused by Cyclone Sidr, one of the worst cyclones to hit Bangladesh in the last century, has been extensive. The damage includes destroyed houses and schools, uprooted trees, flattened crops, contaminated streams and ponds, dead livestock and disrupted transportation. The threat of diseases such as dysentery, fever and cholera still looms.

Compassion Bangladesh continues to provide assistance in the form of monetary funding, health care, clean water and rebuilding efforts.

UPDATE: Nov. 19, 2007 - The Compassion Bangladesh office was without power for two days as Cyclone Sidr, a Category 5 cyclone, made landfall with winds up to 150 mph. Communication and transportation remains difficult in the country.

Compassion Bangladesh staff are working tirelessly to assess the impact on Compassion-assisted children, families and church partners and to provide relief to those who need help. It is estimated that 60 to 70 percent of the homes in the affected areas have been destroyed and that 95 percent of the rice crop that was ready for harvest has also been destroyed.

The following projects have been affected:

  • Chalksingh Child Sponsorship Program (BD-301)
  • Badarpur Child Sponsorship Program (BD-302)
  • Talbari Child Sponsorship Program (BD-303)
  • Bajua Child Sponsorship Program (BD-305)
  • Dumuria Child Sponsorship Program (BD-306)
  • Kuadanga Child Sponsorship Program (BD-309)
  • Gitatola Child Sponsorship Program (BD-310)
  • Mohandi Child Sponsorship Program (BD-312)
  • Satalia Child Sponsorship Program (BD-313)
  • Rogunandanpur Child Sponsorship Program (BD-318)
  • Roghunathpur Child Sponsorship Program (BD-319)
  • Suagram Child Sponsorship Program (BD-320)
  • Unoshia Child Sponsorship Program (BD-321)
  • Baratia Child Sponsorship Program (BD-322)

Please pray for the Compassion children, families and church partners affected by the devastation wrought by Cyclone Sidr.

Compassion Bangladesh will provide updates as more information becomes available.

Compassion International will contact you if your sponsored child has been affected.

Nov. 16, 2007 - A cyclone with 150 mph winds has devastated Bangladesh. News reports say Tropical Cyclone Sidr killed at least 1,100 people and left millions of others without homes and power.

Compassion assists more than 9,000 registered children and their families in Bangladesh. Because electricity has been knocked out in much of the country, information has been difficult to obtain. As of now, Compassion has not received any reports that Compassion children, families, church partners or staff workers have been affected. We will continue to keep a close watch on the crisis for any developments.
