On September 10, rioting broke out in Kampala, Uganda, in the city center and several surrounding suburbs.
The riots are a result of the central government's decision to block the prime minister of the Buganda kingdom from entering the Kayunga district.
Five people were killed and more than 40 were injured when the rioters looted and burned shops, destroyed cars and blocked roads.
There are 23 Compassion-assisted child development centers in the districts of Mukono, Masaka and Kayunga, where the riots occurred. These affected centers have temporarily suspended activities until the situation is safe.
Some of the Compassion Uganda staff who live in the area of the riots were not able to go home yesterday.
A group of U.S. sponsors were relocated from Kampala to the Entebbe district, a safer location close to the airport.
Please pray for the Lord to protect the children, families, Compassion Uganda staff and visiting sponsors. Pray that the government would take strong actions to end the riots, and that peace would be restored to the region quickly.
Compassion Uganda will keep us updated as more information is available.
Compassion International will contact you if your sponsored child has been affected.
