Thailand is a land of beauty - beautiful landscapes inhabited by beautiful people. Its natural geography and climate support the abundant growth of agricultural products, and this abundance affects the attitudes of the Thai people because many things are inexpensive and easy to acquire. In general, the Thai are a peace-loving people with simple priorities; they are refreshingly without ambition and satisfied with what they have.
Religion
In addition to the geographical features of the country, the Thai value system - which is inseparably tied to the Theravada sect of Buddhism - plays an important part in molding Thai attitudes. The piety of the Thai people is quietly obvious, with Buddhist temples and statues dotting the landscape as men and women alike seek to escape the life cycle of suffering described in the Four Noble Truths. The Thai people hope to find enlightenment by following the Noble Eightfold Path, which emphasizes having the right thoughts and actions.
Culture
Thai people are not accustomed to physical contact, such as hugs or kisses - especially with people of the opposite gender whom they have just met. For some children, a hug at your first meeting might be okay. But for others, it might make them feel embarrassed. The best approach is to watch their body language and, if appropriate, ask them if you can give them a hug. The piety of the Thai is also seen in their daily maintenance of spirit houses, which are featured prominently in most of their homes and businesses. Their hope is that a well-maintained spirit house will appease the spirits and keep them from inflicting harm on the home or business occupants.
Food
Other highlights of Thailand include its many festivals and its thriving tourism industry. And the food, of course, is delicious - the intense flavors of Thailand have migrated around the world, and most major cities are home to many Thai restaurants. Thai cuisine, so delicious and varied in its tastes, presents an enormous range of dishes and a subtle blend of flavors. Creativity in cooking stems partly from the Thais' love of good food and partly from the wealth of ingredients available.
Shopping
Shopping in Thailand is said to be better than in most countries, with a rich array of products available at bargain prices. Many of the vendors speak at least a little bit of English, and will negotiate with and offer discounts to those who ask persistently. The list of products available is endless, but Thailand is especially known for its bags and luggage, umbrellas, clothing and fabrics, jewelry, and carvings of silver, bronze, and wood.
All in all, whether a person goes to visit a sponsored child, explore the country, or enjoy some Thai food and shopping, most visitors will agree that Thailand is a beautiful place with a unique personality and culture.
