Francis Basas, a student at the Daraga Child Care and Learning Center, lost his father and five siblings in Typhoon Durian. Currently, he and his mother, Mercoria, live in an evacuation center, but will soon move into their new home provided through gifts to the Philippines Typhoon Response Fund. "My prayer for Mercoria and Francis is that they will be stable in life … and, of course, that they may continue to grow in the Lord," says Romy Mercadero, Francis' project director. Upon seeing the crowded, dangerous conditions at public evacuation centers, Compassion made the decision to erect a temporary center for Compassion-assisted families. Between 30 and 40 families are still living in Compassion's evacuation center in Kiwalo. Here, each family has its own living quarters, and pastors and project workers are on call 24 hours a day to provide physical and spiritual support.
