Advisory: Swine Flu (H1N1 Virus) Outbreak in Mexico

UPDATE: June 3, 2009 – The H1N1 virus continues to spread. It is now confirmed in 62 countries with more than 17,000 reported cases. More than 5,000 of these cases are in Mexico.

Compassion staff in Mexico confirm that no Compassion-assisted children have been infected by the H1N1 virus.

All of Compassion's church partners are reinforcing hygiene practices such as hand washing and the use of masks in food preparation to reduce the risk of infection.

Child development centers are screening children daily for flu symptoms.

Please continue to pray for all children, staff and families in Mexico. Pray that government leaders as well as Compassion staff in Mexico will know best how to address this epidemic and prevent the spread of the virus.

Compassion Mexico will keep us updated as more information is available.

UPDATE: May 28, 2009 – The H1N1 virus continues to spread and has been confirmed in 46 countries. Mexico has reported more than 4,100 cases and 80 related deaths.

Mexico's National Alert status has been lowered from yellow to green.

All Compassion-assisted child development centers continue to resume regular activities. However, there are concerns about the centers in Hidalgo, which is one of the states in Mexico hit hardest by the virus.

Compassion staff in Mexico still confirm that no Compassion-assisted children have been affected by the virus although; the father of one registered child has been hospitalized for symptoms that could be related to the virus.

His family is being monitored. So far, no one in his family has been listed as sick or in need of treatment.

The country office task force continues to watch the situation closely.

Please continue to pray for all children, staff and families in Mexico. Pray that government leaders as well as Compassion staff in Mexico will know best how to address this epidemic and prevent the spread of the illness.

UPDATE: May 22, 2009 – The H1N1 virus (previously called the swine fu) has been confirmed in 40 countries, with over 9,500 reported cases, including more than 3,500 cases and 72 deaths in Mexico.
 
Mexico's national health authorities are advising people to resume normal life activities, but to exercise caution by continuing to use masks in public.

Compassion staff in Mexico confirm that no Compassion-assisted children have been infected by the H1N1 virus.

All of Compassion's child development centers have reopened, including the centers in Hidalgo and Chiapas which resumed regular activities on Monday, May 18.

The following precautions are taking place to help stop the spread of the disease:

  • All of Compassion's church partners are reinforcing hygiene practices, such as hand washing and the use of masks in food preparation, to reduce the risk of infection.
  • Child development centers are screening children daily for flu symptoms.
  • Mexico's country office task force is developing hand-washing posters to distribute to centers, as well as evaluating other health recommendations such as vitamins or vaccinations.

UPDATE: May 15, 2009 – The H1N1 virus has now been confirmed in 30 countries, with more than 5,000 reported cases, including more than 2,000 cases and 50 deaths in Mexico.

Mexico's National Alert status has been lowered, allowing public places such as schools, offices, restaurants, and movie theaters to operate normally.

Compassion staff in Mexico confirm that so far no Compassion-assisted children have been infected by the H1N1 virus.

All of Compassion's child development centers have reopened except those in Hidalgo and Chiapas, which remain closed until at least Monday, May 18.

Compassion Mexico is asking church partners to conduct cleaning of the child development centers to reduce the risk of infection.

Mexico's country office staff members have returned to working in the office and were provided with antibacterial gel and cleaning supplies.

UPDATE: May 6, 2009 – The H1N1 virus (previously called the swine flu) has been confirmed in 21 countries, including the following field and partner countries:

The Compassion staff in Mexico confirms that no Compassion-assisted children have been infected by the H1N1 virus.

Following recommendations by Mexican government authorities, primary schools will reopen on Monday, May 11, and secondary schools will reopen on Thursday, May 7.

Compassion Mexico is asking church partners to conduct cleaning of the child development centers to reduce the risk of infection.

UPDATE: May 4, 2009 – The H1N1 virus (previously called the swine flu) has spread from Mexico to at least 11 other countries.

Many parts of Mexico remain closed in an attempt to control the spread of the H1N1 virus.

Compassion-assisted child development centers throughout Mexico remain closed following government recommendations.

Church partners remain in contact with registered children. There have been no reports of additional Compassion-assisted children affected by the virus.

Compassion Mexico has formed a task force to follow up with partner churches about the status of registered children.

UPDATE: April 30, 2009 - Cases of swine flu continue to spread throughout Mexico, with nearly 2,500 people now infected.

Although most cases are located in Mexico City, many other states have confirmed cases of the disease.

Schools, churches and other public venues remain closed through May 6, following government recommendation.

Many of the Mexico Country Office staff have changed their schedules or are working remotely to avoid public transportation.

The father of one Compassion-assisted child has been diagnosed and treated for swine flu, but no other family members have been affected.

No Compassion-assisted children have been diagnosed with the flu; however, six children from the following three child development centers are currently under medical observation for flu-like symptoms:

  • ME-778
  • ME-886
  • ME-900

April 28, 2009 - An outbreak of swine flu sweeping across Mexico has infected more than 1,600 people and caused more than 100 deaths.

Mexican government health authorities recently closed schools and universities until at least May 6.

Following government recommendations, all Compassion-assisted child development centers in Mexico are closed through at least May 6.

Other public places such as theaters, museums, parks and even churches are also closed to prevent the spread of the disease.

Compassion Mexico and the Country Management Team have requested that all child development centers assess the health of their registered children.
