Banda Aceh, the capital of the Aceh province on Indonesia's Sumatra Island, was near the epicenter of a 9.0-magnitude earthquake that set off a killer tsunami. Most of Banda Aceh was obliterated and over 165,000 people died. News of the quake and tsunami triggered worldwide relief efforts. Compassion was among several development, relief and government agencies to offer relief soon after the waves ceased. Although Compassion does not have any centers in the hard-hit Banda Aceh area, long after the emergency-aid helicopters and boats return home, we will continue to strengthen families in the area who are affected by this disaster. |

Not wanting his talent to go to waste, Rio's parents have given him every opportunity to paint they could afford. Those in the Siloam Student Center at first provided money for Rio to buy painting supplies. But soon they turned to helping Rio pay his school fees, which allowed his parents to help Rio concentrate on his extraordinary talent. |

Dengue fever has haunted the north coast of Java for years and has again ravaged this city's most vulnerable: infants and children in poverty. Muntamah, a Compassion-assisted child, became one of the nearly 200 Compassion-assisted children who contracted the fever this spring. She received assistance from Compassion's Medical Fund for treatment of the disease and finally recovered. |
