UPDATE: Oct. 7, 2009 – With the return of the exiled president, Manuel Zelaya, political turmoil continues in the Honduran capital of Tegucigalpa.
Negotiations between the interim leader and the exiled president have been, and continue to be, unsuccessful.
The country will hold its presidential elections Nov. 29. Until then, the conflict is likely to remain unresolved.
As of Sept. 30, the government curfew has been lifted.
The Compassion office and all child development centers are now operating normally, although attendance at some child development centers remains low.
Some Leadership Development students have had to miss classes due to the following reasons:
- The universities were being used by protestors.
- Transportation was difficult.
- Night classes were impeded by the government curfew.

UPDATE: Sept. 24, 2009 – The tension in Honduras is growing as political turmoil continues in the capital city of Tegucigalpa.
Negotiations continue to be unsuccessful between the interim leader and the exiled president.
The Honduran government has imposed a nationwide curfew that has effectively shut down the entire country, although citizens were allowed to visit the grocery stores, drugstores and gas stations for a short time yesterday.
The Compassion office, Leadership Development Program activities and all child development centers have suspended operation until the situation is resolved.
The Compassion office is located very close to the Brazilian Embassy, where many of the protests and conflicts are taking place.
Although some Compassion staff members are able to work from their homes, in several cases the violence is taking place right in front of their homes.
No Compassion-assisted children or staff have been injured.

UPDATE: August 11, 2009 - Political turmoil continues in the Honduran capital of Tegucigalpa.
Amidst unsuccessful negotiations, the Compassion office and all child development centers continue to operate normally.
In response to the volatile situation, the Honduran government has imposed a 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. curfew for the El Paraiso region in southeastern Honduras. This has affected the attendance of children in 11 child development centers.

UPDATE: July 15, 2009 - Political demonstrations continue in the Honduran capital of Tegucigalpa.
Negotiations have begun between the interim leader and the exiled president.
The Compassion office and all child development centers continue to operate normally.
UPDATE: July 7, 2009 - The political situation in the Honduran capital of Tegucigalpa is still tense.
The exiled president had planned to return to Honduras July 2, but his plane was prevented from landing.
The Organization of American States (OAS) council has suspended Honduras from the organization until the exiled president is restored to power.
The 75 Compassion-assisted child development centers in the Tegucigalpa area that were temporarily closed have resumed regular activities.
The Compassion Honduras staff members are developing a contingency plan to decide how to operate under these circumstances.
UPDATE: July 2, 2009 - Following the arrest of the president last week, the situation in the capital city, Tegucigalpa, remains tense.
The exiled president plans to return to Honduras today, which could lead to rioting. The 75 child development centers in the area remain closed as a safety precaution.
June 30, 2009 - Following two weeks of political controversy and illegal actions, the president of Honduras was recently arrested and exiled to Costa Rica.
The president of the Congress has replaced him as president of Honduras until the next presidential election on Nov. 29, 2009.
Due to the volatile situation, Compassion's Honduras office and 75 Compassion-assisted child development centers in the Tegucigalpa area are temporarily closed.
Families and children are staying home as a security precaution.
