Advisory: Hurricane Ike Hits Haiti

UPDATE: Sept. 18, 2008 – Haiti is recovering from the extensive destruction caused by four successive hurricanes.

The government has postponed opening schools until Oct. 6. Until then, all church partners are providing food at least twice a week to registered children.

The Haiti Compassion office is also providing food kits to affected child development centers in Gonaives.

In addition to distributing relief supplies, Haiti staff members are contacting child development centers and gathering specific information on the damage.

Please pray for Haiti. The country is in desperate need as it is still trying to recover from previous storms. Also pray for God's protection and provision as Haiti faces more storms during the hurricane season.

Compassion Haiti will keep us updated as more information is available.

Compassion International will contact you if your sponsored child has been affected.

Sept. 15, 2008 - Hurricane Ike is the fourth storm to hit the country in three weeks.

The successive storms caused extensive flooding, which has led to the deaths of more than 600 people and the displacement of 100,000 people.

Cabaret, a small village near the capital of Port-au-Prince, was one of the hardest hit areas with the country's banana and plantain plantations destroyed during the storm.

Several Compassion-assisted children have been affected by the storm; many of their homes have been destroyed or damaged due to flooding.

Compassion-assisted child development center HA-295, in Cabaret, has also been affected by flooding from Hurricane Ike.

HA-295 is currently serving as a shelter for 62 children and providing food, water and medical care.
