Efforts are underway in El Salvador to rebuild and repair homes that were destroyed and damaged by a deadly mudslide on May 29. The mudflow, which was triggered by days of heavy rain, killed one Compassion-assisted child, the child's father and the mother of another Compassion-assisted child in the town of Berlin in Usulután. The region is about 63 miles east of the capital city of San Salvador and home to Compassion-assisted Monte Sinai Student Center (ES-769).
Compassion El Salvador paid the funeral expenses for the Compassion-assisted child and his father who died. Staff also say the Compassion-assisted child who lost her mother in the mudflow is currently being cared for by church workers at the project.
Compassion El Salvador staff say about 30 Compassion-assisted children and their families were affected by the landslide. They report 24 children's homes were damaged and six others were destroyed. The affected families are taking shelter at the Compassion-assisted project. In the meantime, Compassion staff and church partner workers are meeting with local government authorities, discussing plans to rebuild the homes that were destroyed on another strip of land. Compassion El Salvador is also preparing a financial proposal for the reconstruction plans.
Please continue to pray for our Compassion family in El Salvador as they cope with the aftermath of this event.
Compassion International will contact you if your child has been affected.
