Heavy rains in El Salvador triggered a massive mudslide on May 29 near the town of Berlin in Usulután, a state about 63 miles east of the capital city of San Salvador. The town is home to Compassion-assisted Monte Sinai Student Center (ES-769).
Compassion El Salvador reports one Compassion-assisted child, the child's father and the mother of another Compassion-assisted child were killed by the mudflow.
In addition to the deaths, the landslide is also responsible for destroying the homes of two Compassion-assisted children and damaging at least 15 other homes. Compassion El Salvador partnership facilitators are coordinating efforts with church partner workers in providing immediate aid to the affected families, such as food, water and medicines.
Staff at Compassion El Salvador report at least 25 Compassion-assisted children and their families were affected by the mudslide. They say at least 10 of these families are currently taking shelter at the church project.
Please pray for God's peace for all those affected by this natural disaster, especially the families that are grieving the loss of their loved ones.
Compassion International will contact you if your sponsored child has been affected.
