He entered a missionary training school and was chosen to go on a missions trip to Brazil and the Satere tribe.

At age 14, Compassion-sponsored child Gualberto Franco joined a gang. Over the next four years, his unhealthy behavior often threatened his status at his Compassion project in Esmeraldes, Ecuador. But when Project Director Mercy Olaya gave Gualberto her personal Bible and challenged him to go to church that Sunday, she set in motion a string of events that led Gualberto to Christ--just three months before he was to complete Compassion's program.
