UPDATE: Sept. 22, 2009 – Floodwaters continue to destroy the homes of Compassion-assisted children in the Ouagadougou area of Burkina Faso.

Since the flooding, Compassion Burkina Faso has been distributing relief supplies to registered children and their families.
The staff in Burkina Faso continues to work around the clock to help and address the overwhelming needs.
UPDATE: Sept. 9, 2009 – Following severe flooding that has caused extensive infrastructure damage, the government in Burkina Faso issued a statement declaring the country to be in a state of emergency.
There is widespread destruction to homes, buildings, roads, bridges and equipment. Also, the stagnant water has greatly increased the rapid spread of waterborne diseases.
The government is providing emergency aid to flood victims, although much more aid is needed. Compassion is also distributing relief supplies to registered children and their families, including:
More than 1,500 Compassion-assisted children have been affected by the flooding. Many of them have lost homes and possessions.
Compassion Burkina staff members are working around the clock to address the overwhelming needs.
Sept. 3, 2009 - Heavy rains in the Ouagadougou region of Burkina Faso have caused extensive flooding with water up to 12 inches deep.
Reports indicate that an estimated 150,000 people are now homeless and have taken shelter in public schools and churches.
Many homes have collapsed and buildings, roads and bridges have been damaged.
Fifty-six Compassion-assisted child development centers have been affected by the flooding, some with structural damage. Many Compassion-assisted children have also lost homes and possessions.
The staff in Burkina Faso are assessing the damage and gathering information on the needs of specific children.
